It’s been a big summer for Detroit Red Wings personnel who honed their hockey skills in the Big Ten. The club signed former Michigan Wolverine Tyler Motte as a free agent. They’re also promoting a graduate of the Ohio State University in their front.

Director of hockey operations Aaron Kahn is adding assistant GM to his title.

“I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Assistant General Manager & Director of Hockey Operations at Detroit Red Wings,” Kahn posted on his LinkedIn account.

That means the Red Wings now go three-deep in assistant GMs working under GM Steve Yzerman.

Shawn Horcoff’s main duties are to run the Red Wings farm system. He serves as GM of the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.

Kris Draper is the club’s director of amateur scouting. He oversees the club’s scouting staff and is in charge of the work done in preparation for the NHL entry draft.

Kahn Will Be Working On Red Wings Hockey Business

In Kahn’s wheelhouse will be the business side of the Red Wings hockey operations. He’ll be working on contracts, and also with salary cap issues.

A native of Berkeley, California, Kahn was a goalie who played his youth hockey for the San Jose Jr. Sharks. A walk on at Ohio State, he played all of his college hockey with the Buckeyes club team in the ACHA. He graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Sport Industry and Business with a pre-law focus.

Following his granduation, he would spend the 2016-17 NCAA season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons. He would work with the Falcons goaltenders and as a video coach.

Kahn got his law degree at UCLA and worked as a corporate attorney for the Los Angeles firm of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.

His first NHL job was a media relations intern with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2015. From 2019-21, Kahn was serving in hockey operations for the Washingon Capitals as a salary cap and legal affairs assistant. The Red Wings would hire him as director of hockey operations in the summer of 2021.
