Sweden's Raymond and Finland's Maatta prepare for clash

For the time being, Detroit Red Wings teammates Lucas Raymond and Olli Maatta aren’t on speaking terms. There won’t be any talking – not even trash talking – until after Thursday’s IIHF World Championship quarterfinal between Raymond’s Sweden and Maatta’s Finland reaches a conclusion.

“No, he will be in airplane mode,” Raymond told Swedish website Aftonbladet.se of his Detorit teammate Maatta.

“I don’t think there will be much talk ahead, unfortunately. We can talk afterwards, if either of us feels like it.”

The Sweden vs Finland rivalry is one of the most bitter in all of international hockey. There’s bad blood, but also mutual respect.

“You have grown up and seen many classic matches against Finland,” Sweden’s Marcus Pettersson of the Pittsburgh Penguins told Aftonbladet. “There are many at home on the sofa in front of the TV who have lived through such things.

“There are probably many in our team who have met their players in the U16 national team and all the way up. It’s a rivalry and it’s going to be great fun.”

Red Wings Were Swedish Heroes

As recently as 2019, en route to winning the world title, the Finns edged the Swedes 5-4 in overtime in a quarterfinal that the Swedes were favored to win.

The situation is similar this time around. Finland finished fourth in their group. Meanwhile, for the first time in tournament history, the Swedes went 7-0 in pool play, capturing all available 21 points. Sweden enters the medal round as the top seed.

In 2006, when Sweden beat Finland in the gold-medal match at the Winter Olympics, it was Red Wings legend Nicklas Lidstrom who would score the deciding goal in the 3-2 victory by the Swedes. Sweden’s other two goals in that game were also scored by Red Wings players – Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall.

Raymond is among 18 NHL players on the Swedish roster. He has scored three goals for Sweden in this tournament. Maatta one of four NHLers with Finland, is playing in his third world tourney in four years.

He’s not the only Finnish player with a connection to the Red Wings organization. Finland goaltender Harri Sateri played for the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins in 2018-19. As well, defenseman Oliwer Kaski was with the Griffins in 2019-20 and defenseman Villi Saarijarvi skated in Grand Rapids from 2017-20.

Jeff Petry is the third Detroit Red Wings player and the fifth member of the organization to join Team USA for the upcoming World Championships in Czechia.

The veteran defenseman joins his captain Dylan Larkin and goalie Alex Lyon, plus Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde, who will be one of John Hynes’ assistant coaches and Alex Westlund who will the U.S. goalie coach. Lalonde was also an assistant coach for the U.S. squad last year.

Petry, a right-shot, will be joining a defense that boasts Seth Jones (Chicago Blackhawks) also signed up to play on the right side. The team also has commitments from left-shot D men Zach Werenski (Columbus Blue Jackets), Luke Hughes (New Jersey Devils), Jake Sanderson (Ottawa Senators) and Alex Vlasic (Chicago Blackhawks).

In addition to Larkin, the forward group includes Brady Tkachuk (Ottawa), Cole Caufield (Montreal Canadiens), Matt Boldy (Minnesota Wild) and Johnny Gaudreau (Columbus) among others.

On paper, the Americans are putting together one of their most competitive groups in recent years. The roster includes 11 first-round NHL Draft picks and more than 5,000 games of NHL experience. The group will compete in Ostrava and Prague from May 10-26. The U.S. finished in the top four of the Men’s World Championship in seven of the last 10 tournaments with four bronze medals to its credit (2013, 2015, 2018 and 2021).

Detroit forward Lucas Raymond has committed to play for the Swedish team.

The U.S. was the world champion in 1960 because it won the Olympic tournament. Separate tournaments were not held then. But USA hasn’t won a World Championships tournament since 1933.

At some point soon, the Detroit Red Wings are going to run out of moral victories to give. Amazingly, that time still hasn’t arrived. And Detroit has no one to thank for that fact other than just about every other squad involved in this pathetic race for the final Eastern Conference wild card place.

If you ever pondered what the fable of the tortoise and the hare would look like if only tortoises were entered in the race, well, wonder no more. This chase is exactly that.

There is no frontrunner. Just a gathering of stragglers, dawdlers slowly lumbering their way to the finish line.

Red Wings Stumble Through March

The Red Wings were 3-9-2 in March and are in the midst of an 0-7-2 skid on the road. Yet with 80 points, they remain a scant two points out of a playoff position.

That’s because the Philadelphia Flyers were 5-7-3 over the past month, while the New Jersey Devils went 6-9. The New York Islanders are 2-7-1 through their past 10 games and the Buffalo Sabres are 2-4 over the past six.

Only the Washington Capitals, 6-2-1 through the past nine games, are making a move. And that move on Saturday was to surpass the Flyers for third spot in the Metropolitan Division. It’s entirely possible that we may have seen the last of the Caps in the wild card race.

Let’s look to the week ahead as the Red Wings continue their chase for a playoff spot.

Detroit Red Wings (36-30-8, 80 points)

Games This Week: Monday at Tampa Bay, Friday vs New York Rangers, Sunday vs Buffalo.

The Red Wings keep touting moral victories, which count for nothing in the standings.

“I think our compete and our willingness to play the game that gives us success,” Red Wings defenseman Jeff Petry was telling Bally Sports Detroit as to what he liked about their performance in Saturday’s 3-2 shootout loss at Florida.

“That’s the recipe at this time of the year, is no matter what the circumstances, continuing to fight and play that team style game like we’ve been playing the last few. If we continue to do that, the points are going to come.”

Coach Derek Lalonde was pointing out that the Wings have a point in two of their last three games. What he failed to mention is that in both of those games, Detroit blew third-period leads before settling for one point.

Goalie Alex Lyon looks to be finding his game. However, even at that, he’s 0-8-2 over his past 10 decisions.

Washington Capitals (36-27-10, 82 points)

Games This Week: Tuesday at Buffalo, Thursday vs Pittsburgh, Friday at Carolina, Sunday vs Ottawa.

Here’s a big difference between Washington and Detroit. The Capitals also recently embarked upon a five-game road swing. They went 3-2.

Washington has lost just twice in regulation over the past nine games. Both defeats were given to them by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Philadelphia Flyers (36-29-10, 82 points)

Games This Week: Monday vs New York Islanders, Friday at Buffalo, Saturday at Columbus.

Supposedly, the Flyers are left with the softest finishing schedule of any team left in this race. Back to back losses to the Montreal Canadiens (4-1) and Chicago Blackhawks (5-1) by a combined 9-2 margin display that there are no easy games on the NHL slate.

Another concern for the Flyers is that they’ve only got seven games left to play. However, they do win the tiebreaker with the Red Wings, so it’s almost like Philly is holding a three-point edge over Detroit.

New York Islanders (31-27-15, 77 points)

Games This Week: Monday at Philadelphia, Tuesday vs Chicago, Thursday at Columbus, Saturday vs Nashville.

The bloom emanating from the arrival of new coach Patrick Roy has long since wilted. The Islanders are in free fall.

All that’s keeping them relevant is that the Isles still have nine games to play. However, if they don’t win Monday’s game at Philly, stick a fork in them. They’ll be done.

Detroit is 0-2-2 on road trip

Officially, the Detroit Red Wings are currently residing in the Sunshine State. In their headspace, though, it’s abundantly clear that they’ve entered into a state of denial.

Squandering a third-period lead, the Red Wings were able to scramble back and gain a point in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Florida Panthers on Saturday afternoon.

“Obviously this one stings,” Detroit defenseman Jeff Petry was admitting to Bally Sports Detroit. “We wanted to get two (points).”

“It kind of feels like (Tuesday’s overtime loss at) Washington,” added Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde. “You feel a little empty, not getting the full two points.”

These offerings were rare honest insights from a team that evidently thinks with eight games to play, there’s plenty of time to right ship and get back on track for a playoff spot.

“I think our team game is growing,” Petry said. “If we bring that effort and compete every night from here on out, we’re gonna put ourselves in a good spot.”

Can’t you just picture Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman, competitor that he is, seething with rage and anger as he’s hearing these comments?

Results All That Matter For Red Wings

For the most part, the Red Wings are delivering empty plaudits about effort and compete and sticking with the process.

Lalonde was describing the outcome as both “an extremely impressive point” an a “absolute huge point.”

“Under the circumstances, you probably want both points,” the coach did admit. “But with all that said, it’s points in two of our last three games.”

Yes, an overtime loss to the team you’re chasing and a shootout loss to a team that had dropped four in a row at home and was 1-5-1 through the past seven games.

News flash – next week, it’s April. The stretch drive. And the Red Wings are chasing the Capitals for the last Eastern Conference postseason placing. A point here and a point there isn’t going to get the job done.

Giving it the old college try doesn’t amount for much in the pro ranks.

Larkin Bounces Back, Lyon Sharp

There were some positive developments during the loss. Missing most of the first period after being struck in the left knee by a Petry point shot, captain Dylan Larkin would return to score the goal that sent the game to overtime. Goalie Alex Lyon, still without a win since Feb. 27, was nonetheless sharp. He would parry 36 of 38 shots.

Overall, though, it’s not about the subtext at this juncture of the season. It’s about the outcome. The Red Wings are now 0-2-2 on this five-game road trip that concludes Monday at Tampa Bay. They’ve dropped nine in a row away from home (0-7-2). Detroit finished the month of March with a 3-9-2 slate.

That’s not a playoff drive. It’s driving off a cliff.

Jeff Petry‘s family has owned Detroit Lions season tickets dating back to the Pontiac Silverdome. Coach Derek Lalonde is proud to own a Aidan Hutchinson jersey. Alex DeBrincat had Sam LaPorta on his fantasy team.

The Detroit Red Wings, just like everyone else in the state of Michigan, are all in when it comes to the Detroit Lions.

“I feel like a lot of the guys are pretty invested right now come playoff time,”  said DeBrincat, who grew up in Farmington Hills. “Just fun to watch. Just rally around the city of Detroit. ”

The Red Wings were amused to hear the “Jared Goff, Jared Goff, Jared Goff,” chants start up at Little Caesars Arena.

“It’s cool,” DeBrincat said. “I think it’s definitely you can tell people are excited to be in this situation and be able to watch playoff games and invest in it. Obviously Goff’s a very important player on their team and has brought them this far. It’s pretty cool to see and be a part of. That was a cool moment in the game the other day. Just seeing the whole state of Michigan rally around one team is definitely special.”

At 36, Petry has some Lions memories that date back to the Silverdome.

“I remember going to a handful of games with my dad (former Detroit Tigers pitcher Dan) or being able to take a friend as we got older,” Jeff Petry said. “I wouldn’t say I was a die-hard Lions fan but enjoyed watching them and being able to go to games, that’s a memory of my childhood for sure.”

Lalonde Has Torn Allegiance

Lalonde’s admiration of the Lions is more recent. As a western New York native, Lalonde is a lifelong Buffalo Bills fans. But he has adopted the Lions. He has met Lions coach Dan Campbell and Hutchinson and wants to invite Campbell to talk to the Red Wings after the Lions season is over.

“I think what’s been most impressive about this is how authentic the group is,” Lalonde said. “How real it is. The energy of it. How can you not like the group, the passion, the swagger? It’s just been really cool to watch. Obviously, my son, the crew, the guys, my family, can’t wait to watch tomorrow.”

Lalonde’s sons are Lions fan, which has added to the fun for the Detroit coach.

“I like Hutch. I have a jersey,” Lalonde said. “Meeting him, too. He came over, gave me the bro hug, gave my boys some time. So I appreciate that. My oldest son is a huge Amon-Ra (St. Brown) fan. We went to the Bills game last year on Thanksgiving and obviously, I’m very invested in my Bills and he had his Amon-Ra jersey on and was digging me, which was fun. The group, the way they compete, it’s fun to watch.”

Red Wings Have Day Off

DeBrincat said some of the Red Wings have been getting together to watch the Lions playoff games. That will likely happen today as well. Lalonde has given the team a day off. No practice after Saturday’s 5-2 win against the Vegas Golden Knights. Captain Dylan Larkin indicated that the players are planning to gather at Justin Holl’s home to watch the game.

Lalonde will be home watching with his family. He promises to wear his Hutchinson jersey.

He was asked whether it is easier for him that he no longer has the possibility of a Buffalo vs. Detroit Super Bowl.

Yes. Very,” he said. “But it’s my Bills. Been hard on me. To have a team like that, it’s a real passion to it. It’s so fun to watch. I’ll be very invested (Sunday).”

Berggren, Edvinsson, Czarnik joining Detroit

Without even having to say so, the Detroit Red Wings are making it abundantly clear that the injuries suffered by Christian Fischer and Jeff Petry are of a serious nature.

Petry and Fischer were involved in a clash of heads during Detroit’s 3-2 loss at New Jersey on Dec. 23. The collision occurred during the second period and neither player was able to continue.

The team has offered no public update on their condition over the NHL’s Christmas break. However, roster news happening early Tuesday evening between the Red Wings and their AHL affiliate the Grand Rapids Griffins was certainly revealing.

Detroit was recalling defenseman Simon Edvinsson and forwards Jonatan Berggren and Austin Czarnik from the Griffins under emergency conditions. At the same time, the team was placing Fischer on IR retroactive to Dec. 23.

Edvinsson made his season debut against the Devils. Both Czarnik and Berggren have already played several games with the Red Wings during the 2023-24 campaign.

Berggren Consistently Producing With Red Wings, Griffins

During a three-game stint with Detroit from Dec. 11-14, Berggren would net a point in all three games. He wound up compiling two goals and an assist in that span. He’s showing 2-2-4 numbers and a plus-four rating from seven Red Wings games this season.

Berggren has proven equally impressive while in the Griffins lineup. He’s second on the club 1ith 7-11-18 totals over 19 games. He owns both a three-game goal streak and six-game point streak for Grand Rapids this season.

The sixth player chosen in the 2021 NHL entry draft, Edvinsson was even while skating 13:18 of ice time against the Devils on Dec. 23. Last season, the big Swede netted a pair of goals in nine games for Detroit.

At Grand Rapids this season, Edvinsson was reponsible for assembling a team-high seven-game point streak. The stretch included Edvinsson’s first two-goal game and a pair of multi-assist performances.

In addition to ranking third on the Griffins in points, Edvinsson is tied for fourth among AHL defensemen with six goals and tied for fifth with two power-play tallies.

Czarnik has suited up for 16 games with Detroit this season. He’s showing one assist, six penalty minutes and a minus-three rating. The Detroit native has excelled with the Griffins, recording seven points (3-4—7) in nine outings. That includes a five-game point streak (3-3—6) from Oct. 13-Nov. 29.

In games with Czarnik inthe lineup, the Griffins are 6-2-1-0 (.722). They are 3-11-2-1 (.265) ledger without him.

Petry, Fischer leave game following nasty collision

The ongoing habit that when the Detroit Red Wings go low, they go down was kept intact Saturday at the Prudential Center. A 3-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils dropped Detroit to 0-14-1 this season in games in which the team scores three or fewer goals.

“I liked our entire game,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde told Bally Sports Detroit. “I liked our effort. It would be really hard to knock the guys. I thought our compete was extremely high.

The actual effort the boys put in and where we are at with the roster, some of the adversity we’ve had, the back to back, it just feels a little empty to not get a point out of tonight.”

Up 2-1 entering the final frame, the Wings lost for just the third time this season when leaading after 40 minutes of play. They are 13-3 in that scenario.

With the loss, the Red Wings enter the NHL Christmas break with a 2-7-1 slate over their last 10 games, and 1-4 slate in their past five road games. Perhaps more significantly, two more players were taken from the ice with concerning injuries.

Petry, Fischer Leave Following Collision

During the second period, in the process of delivering an old-school hip check to New Jersey forward Dawson Mercer in the defensive zone, Red Wings defenseman Jeff Petry wound up in a vicious clash of heads with teammate Christian Fischer. Cut over the eye, Fischer seemed to be the one getting the worst of the collision, but neither player was able to continue in game.

“It was alarming,” Lalonde said. “Your first reaction is concern for the two players. And then obviously they both were helped off the ice in some way.

“Obviously, you never like to see that. It was a very unfortunate play. Just playing hard, just happened to be a bad collision there.”

Lalonde offered no update on the condition of either player, other than to acknowledge both are dealing with upper-body injuries.

Edvinsson Makes Red Wings Season Debut

It was the second straight game that Detroit was left to play much of the contest with just five defensemen. Olli Maatta made his departure during the first period of Friday’s 7-6 shootout win over the Philadelphia Flyers with an upper-body injury.

Grand Rapids Griffins defenseman Simon Edvinsson, who was in New York on a Christmas vacation, was given a recall to play Saturday. Justin Holl was a scratch for Detroit.

Working in the third pairing with Shayne Gostisbehere, Edvinsson skated 12:35 of ice time. He took a penalty, had one giveaway and was even.

Following the game, both Edvinsson and forward Austin Czarnik were reassigned to the AHL Griffins.

Hutchinson Does It Right

Goaltender Michael Hutchinson was playing for Detroit for the first time this season, making his Red Wings debut. He’s third first right-handed cathcing netminder to tend goal for the Red Wings since Greg Millen in 1992.

Hutchinson made 32 saves for the Red Wings, the sixth NHL stop of the journeyman netminder’s career. He’s the fourth goalie to start a game for the Wings this season, following Ville Husso, James Reimer and Alex Lyon. Both Husso and Lyon are currently on IR.

“Mostly just excitement,”Hutchinson said of his return to the NHL. “It’s fun to play. It’s fun to play in the NHL. Just looking forward to getting another opportunity.”

Kane, Gostibehere Stay Hot

Patrick Kane gave Detroit a 1-0 lead and Gostisbehere tallied to a make it 2-1 in the second period.

For Kane, it was his four straight game with a point. He’s collected eight points over that span.

Gostisbehere, meanwhile, has accounted for 16 points (4-12-16) over his last 19 games.

Falling behind 4-0 to the Anaheim Ducks on Monday, the Detroit Red Wings couldn’t battle all the way back in a 4-3 loss. However, the goals the team did come up with certainly bode well for the future.

Alex DeBrincat scored a pair of third-period power-play tallies. That gives him 15 goals on the season.

Both goals were one timers from the left faceoff circle. The first was on a cross-ice feed from Patrick Kane. That’s a setup familiar from their Chicago Blackhawks days together, and one Red Wings fans have been waiting to see in person.

Collecting a pair of assists on the night, Kane enjoyed his first multi-point game since joining Detroit seven games ago.

“We have skill guys, scorers,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. “When they finish, that’s important. Obviously two nice finishes.”

Detroit’s other goal came from defenseman Jeff Petry. That was the first as a Red Wings player for the son of former Detroit Tigers pitcher Dan Petry.

Larkin Back For Red Wings

For the second successive game, Detroit was welcoming a key component back into the lineup. Captain Dylan Larkin was returning to action following a four-game absence due to an upper-body injury.

“It’s huge,” DeBrincat said. “He’s obviously our leader and our best player. Nice to get him back. We obviously missed him a lot.

“Happy he’s back and hopefully we can get this back on the tracks.”

Larkin drew an assist and played 21:13, but was minus-2.

In Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Philadelphia, center J.T. Compher was back after missing five games with an undisclosed injury.

Lalonde that the return of both players remains a work in progress.

“Not as sharp,” Lalonde said of Larkin’s performance. “As the game went on, much better. Probably the same thing with J.T., as his two games went on.

“They were driving pre their injuries so it’ll take them a little bit of time with their timing.”

Ice Chips

DeBrincat’s first goal was his 400th NHL point . . . It was his his fourth multi-goal game and sixth multi-point game of the season . . . Defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere also finished with a pair of assists for his seventh multi-point game of the season . . . Kane has an active 12-game point-scoring streak against the Ducks.

Detroit Red Wings forward Robby Fabbri is once more coming back strongly from an injury-enforced absence. Then again, he’s well-versed at doing it.

Fabbri was scoring a goal in Detroit’s 5-4 win over Columbus on Saturday. It was his second game back following a month-long absence due to a lower-body injury. His tally this season is two goals in three games.

Four times during his NHL career he’s been required to rebound from knee surgery.

“Yeah, it’s not something I’m proud of, to say I’ve got the experience in that,” Fabbri said of coming back from injury. “It’s just a mental battle more than physical.

“I’ve done it a few times, so I kind of know where to keep my mind at and then that helps me get my body ready.”

Skating on the third line with Joe Veleno and Christian Fischer, Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde was appreciative of the performance his team got from that entire unit.

“That line was excellent,” Lalonde said. “All three just hunt the puck, get above it, creating turnovers, zone time.”

Red Wings Power Play Still Not Delivering

It was close at times, but there were still no cigars being handed out as far as the Detroit power-play unit was concerned. The Red Wings were 0-3 with the man advantage.

“I think we worked the puck well the first couple we had some opportunities,” Detroit defenseman Jeff Petry said. “Ghost (Shayne Gostisbehere) had one off a seam pass hit the goalie’s shoulder.

A unit that was clicking as the No. 2 power play in the NHL through the first six games of the season is operating as the 27th-best in the league ever since.

“We had an opportunity there to start the third period and we weren’t able to get into the zone,” Petry said. “That was a little frustrating.”

In past years, to suggest that the defense of the Detroit Red Wings was offensive took on an entirely different connotation.

This season, it’s a good thing. The team from the D is getting plenty of offensive contribution from the D. More than any other team in the NHL in fact.

Accounting for another four points in Monday’s 4-3 overtime verdict over the New York Islanders, Detroit’s blueline brigade was raising their NHL-leading number to 33 points. Moritz Seider was dishing out a pair of assists, while his defense partner Jake Walman would score once and also contribute a helper.

“It starts with D and then getting the puck up to our guys we got,” Walman told Bally Sports Detroit. “Everybody can bury it.”

Seider is leading all NHL defensemen with nine assists. He rates in a tie for second overall in points among reaguards with 10. Offseason addition Shayne Gostisbehere is in a tie for fourth spot on that list with 3-6-9 numbers. Gostisbehere (six) and Seider (five) have also collected 11 power-play points between them.

Walman is next on the list with 2-3-5 totals, but all seven of Detroit’s defensemen have at least two points to their names. Justin Holl has three assists in eight games and an impressive +7 rating. Ben Chiarot has a goal and an assist, while both Jeff Petry and Olli Maatta are showing two assists each next to them on the stats sheet.

Red Wings End Island Drought

Detroit had never won a game at UBS Arena, new home to the New York Islanders, prior to Monday’s victory. The Red Wings were 0-3 there.

As well, they were also halting an 0-5-2 overall skid on the road against the Islanders.

Compher Reaches Milestone

It was looking as if J.T. Compher was the scorer of the game winner when his third-period tally was completing Detroit’s rally from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead. The Islanders would tie the game on an esnuing power play, sending the contest to overtime.

Compher would still be playing a hero’s role, only this time as a set-up man. His pass would set up Lucas Raymond for the OT winner in Detroit’s 4-3 victory.

In doing so, Compher was collecting the 199th and 200th points of his NHL career.
