Simon Edvinsson Still Putting Up Points for The Griffins

Detroit Red Wings top prospect defenseman Simon Edvinsson picked up an assist in the Grand Rapids Griffins’ 4-0 win against the Chicago Wolves  to give him six points in his past four games.

Over his last six games, Edvinsson, 20, has seven points and is +3. He has 11 points in 16 games with 38 shots on goal. That’s roughly a 50-point pace over a 72-game AHL season. Edvinsson is tied for second among Griffins scorers. Only Taro Hirose (17 points) has more.

As long as the Red Wings’ seven veterans are healthy, the Red Wings are not in a hurry to recall the 6-foot-6 Edvinsson. Last night’s contest was his 68th AHL game. The Red Wings prefer to have Edvinsson, at his age, playing in all situations rather than be a limited playing time defenseman at the NHL level.

However, it also seems likely that at some point this season, GM Steve Yzerman will carve out a roster spot and coach Derek Lalonde will find some playing time for him. He is the team’s top prospect.

Prospect Amadeus Lombardi also scored his third goal of the season.  With six points, Lombardi has one point more than 2022 first round pick Marco Kasper. All three of Lombardi’s goals have come in the last seven games as he starts to find his way in his first AHL season.

Michael Hutchinson recorded the shutout in goal. He has given the Griffins the steady veteran presence they wanted on the roster to team with top goalie prospect Sebastian Cossa. Hutchinson is 4-5 with a 2.84 goals-against average and .905 save percentage.

Zach Aston-Reese scored twice for Grand Rapids. He could end up with Detroit at some point this season
