Red Wings Salary Cap Update: Not Much Flexibility (+)

Moritz Seider, Red Wings

Albert Johansson’s new $775,000 salary shows that Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman is trying to keep as much cap space as possible in anticipation of signing either his UFAs or others in the marketplace.

After Johansson’s signing, the Red Wings now have 15 players signed with roughly $27.7 million in cap space remaining. That includes Johansson and Edvinsson, who still must make the team at training camp in September. Based on Edvinsson’s play late in the season and Johansson now needing waivers to be sent to the American Hockey League, DHN projects they will make the team.

The 15 signed players also include defenseman Justin Holl, who is a candidate to be traded. But there is no guarantee that the Red Wings will be able to move his salary ($3.4 million salary cap hit for next two seasons). The buyout on Holl is $1.133 million per season for the next four seasons.
