Detroit coach Lalonde prepared to pair first-round picks

This season, the Detroit Red Wings might just be giving the fanbase something they’ve been longing to witness.

A playoff berth?

Well, that, too.

However, in this instance we’re talking about a defensive pairing of Moritz Seider with Simon Edvinsson. Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde is hinting that it could very well be happening at some point during the 2024-25 NHL campaign.

“I still think our top four, even some of our D pairs, will be fluid,” Lalonde said. “Probably like to see Simon and Mo together a little bit.”

Seider, the sixth player chosen in the 2019 NHL entry draft and Edvinson, chosen sixth overall in 2021, are going to be the cornerstones of the Detroit defense going forward. And Lalonde appears ready to cement that status sooner rather than later.

As Edvinsson prepares for his first full season in Detroit, the coach is opening up the opportunity for him to be one of the players driving the bus for the Red Wings.

“I see him in a top four (role) and we’ll kind of let it play out from there,” Lalonde said of Edvinsson. “Hopefully, he can even eat minutes. If he’s got it going one night we might be a little fluid with our top four.

“If he earns more minutes, he’ll get more minutes. We’re going to play to win and if he is the guy that earns those minutes to help us out down the stretch, he’ll get those minutes.”

Pairings Likely to Start Out The Same

To start out with, it’s likely that Detroit’s top two defensive pairings will look the same as what finished out last season. Seider will be with Ben Chiarot and Edvinsson with Jeff Petry. However, that, much like the TV listings, will be subject to change,

“Benny and Petry have had some experience together,” Lalonde said. Chiarot and Patry were a tandem during Montreal’s drive to the 2021 Stanley Cup final.

“I think that top four will be fluid, and if anyone else can play their way into that conversation, we’d be happy to see that, too,” Lalonde said.

Seider Back For Red Wings On Tuesday

The first order of business will be getting Seider back up to speed. Fresh from signing a seven-year pact that will pay him $8.55 million per season, he’ll be arriving from Germany and back on the ice with the Red Wings in time for Tuesday’s first practice in Detroit.

Even missing four days of work in Traverse City is enough to set Seider back in comparison to the rest of the group.

“You can see obviously 100% you saw the intensity of our first three days,” Lalonde said. “There’s value to that. Probably even some science to that.

“You know, you kind of get your workloads elevated a little bit that you’re probably going to work off throughout the year, so he’ll have some catch up to do. But I’m sure we’ve got a couple eager assistant coaches that would love that assignment.”

Defenseman signs seven-year pact

On the first day of training camp, the Detroit Red Wings put the last piece of the puzzle in place. They have reached agreement with restricted free agent Moritz Seider on a new contract.

It’s a seven-year deal with an AAV of $8.55 million.

The deal comes just two days after the Red Wings were locking up another key piece of the club’s future. Left-winger Lucas Raymond was agreeing to an eight-year contract with an AAV of $8.075 million.

“Obviously some great news the past few days with Ray signing and then Mo signing, so I think everyone’s kind of relieved that that’s done and over with,” Detroit forward Patrick Kane. “Both those guys are tremendous players. Some of the best players on our team, so obviously huge to have them on our side.

“And both of them, I think, are so deserving as well of their new contracts. Both of them work so hard. They want to be Red Wings. They want to do well for the city here and for the organization. So happy for both those guys and for the team as well.”

With captain Dylan Larkin under contract for another seven seasons at $8.75 million per year, Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman is now assured of having all the key elements of his team’s core in the fold for many years to come.

“Of course it’s fun for us and fun for him,” was the reaction of Red Wings forward Jonatan Berggren when he heard the news. “It’s well deserved and it’s a big, big piece of this organization’s future.

“So yeah, he’s a leader and yeah, I’m really happy for him.”

Seider Currently In Germany

Seider has been working out in his native Germany with his old club Adler Mannheim while contract negotiations were continuing. It’s not clear how quickly he’ll be getting to Traverse City. Training camp there runs through Sunday.

The 2021-22 Calder Trophy winner was the first player ever chosen by Yzerman in an NHL entry draft when he took over as Detroit GM in 2019. He was selecting the German defenseman sixth overall.

At the time, hockey people – and even Seider for that matter – were left in shock by the pick. However, time has proven Yzerman to be a shrewd selector. Seider has never missed a game during three NHL seasons. He’s averaged seven goals and 38 assists over those three NHL campaigns.

Larkin was admitting that it felt odd to be in camp without Seider’s presence.

“We’ll be ready to embrace Mo whenever he does arrive,” Larkin said.

Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman said Monday that he didn’t think “we’re terribly far apart” in contract negotiations with No. 1 defenseman Moritz Seider.

Yzerman rarely characterizes how contract talks are going. He wouldn’t say what he did without believing it.

It doesn’t mean a deal is imminent, but Yzerman’s words suggest he believes he can work something out. With Lucas Raymond signing Monday and training camp starting Thursday, events seem to be bringing the two sides together. Both Yzerman and Seider know that everything has to go right for this team to be a playoff team. Not having their most impactful defender present at the start of training camp would not help.

Seider and Boston’s goalie Jeremy Swayman are the two highest profile restricted free agents left in the marketplace.

Much like the Raymond case, comparables are pointing us to Seider’s number. Minnesota defenseman Brock Faber received $8.5 million per season for eight years.  Buffalo’s Owen Power received an $8.35 million AAV on a seven-year deal. Ottawa defenseman Jake Sanderson was just over an $8 million average on a eight-year deal.

There are other factors: Detroit has $8.75 million remaining in cap space and captain Dylan Larkin is making $8.7 million per season. That points to Seider’s deal coming in at $8.5 or $8.6 million.

Usually, the pressure of training camp starting prompts deals to be completed. Last night, there was social media buzz that Swayman may be getting close as well.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

The Griffins, like the Red Wings, may need some goals. Alexandre Doucet showed in prospect games against the Dallas Stars that he may be able to help.

Defenseman Shai Buium’s minor injury, suffered in the prospect games, will keep him out of the lineup for the start of Detroit training camp Thursday.

Who’s Detroit’s No. 1 goalie for the 2024-25 season? You don’t know and the Red Wings don’t know. GM Steve Yzerman and coach Derek Lalonde will let their four goalies with NHL experience battle it out.

Lucas Raymond signed eight-year deal for $8.075 million per season.

Red Wings Offseason

The Red Wings are undoubtedly pleased that defenseman Axel Sandin Pellikka is healthy enough to start the SHL.

It is always difficult to predict how an NHL player’s contract negotiations will unfold, but no one was predicting the Red Wings and Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider would have difficulty reaching agreement this summer.

The Red Wings want to sign the two young players to long-term deals. Both players want to stay with the Red Wings.

But now with NHL season just over a month away, Raymond’s agent has reported there has been no progress in the Raymond contract talks.  There’s been no official word from the Moritz Seider camp, but there have been whispers that some progress has been made.

Whether that leads to a resolution of a new deal soon remains to be seen. For the first time, there is worry that the players will be unsigned when the season starts. These two players are critical to any hope for the Red Wings to qualify for the playoffs.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Lucas Raymond‘s agent reports there has been no progress in his client’s contract negotiations with the Red Wings.

Shai Buium, Nate Danielson and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard are on Detroit’s roster for the Rookie series games against the Dallas Stars in Traverse City. They two teams will play games on Sept. 14 and 15.

Defenseman Axel Sandin-Pellikka, a 2023 Detroit first-round pick, has recovered nicely from his injury.

What’s the deal with the status of new contracts for Detroit Red Wings restricted free agents Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond? Enquiring Red Wings fans want to know.

There are published reports suggesting that left-winger Raymond and the club are far apart in their negotiations for a new pact. On the other hand, Detroit Hockey Now is hearing from NHL sources familiar with contract talks that Seider and the team are getting close to an agreement on a new deal.

What to believe? There’s the rub when it comes to the Red Wings and rumors. There are so few leaks coming out of Little Caesars Arena at any time of the season that it makes you suspect GM Steve Yzerman is coating the place with industrial strength Flex Seal.

The fact of the matter is that nothing gets out about the business of the team since Yzerman took charge. He’s running the tightest ship in the league. Red Wings front office types who used to be welcoming of the media under Ken Holland’s tutelage now avoid saying much of anything on the record at all costs.

“That’s a question for Steve,” is a popular refrain from members of the club’s hockey operations staff.

The problem with that is Yzerman seldom chooses to interact with the media. And when he does, it’s always on his terms.

“We will get contracts done with them,” Yzerman said earlier this summer of his RFAs. “It’s just a question of when and what term we do on all of them.”

Red Wings Not In The Rumor Business

Stop and think about it for a moment. Since Yzerman became GM, when was the last time a rumor leaked out about Detroit that came to be true? During the last NHL Expansion Draft, the name of every team’s lost player was leaked prior to the draft save one – the Red Wings.

Could Raymond’s camp be playing hardball with the club in contract talks? Sure. In fact, they’d be foolish not to be doing so.

He’s coming off a career year, with 31 goals and a team-leading 72 points. As Detroit was battling for a playoff spot, Raymond would score 14 goals over the club’s final 18 games.

Seder made it abundantly clear from the outset that playing in Detroit was his long-term desire.

“I get both sides,” Seider said shortly after the 2023-24 season reached its conclusion. “In the end it’s a business.

“I’m confident enough to say that I think I’ll be a Red Wing for next year and that’s what matters most.”

Raymond wasn’t as certain about how he saw his future unfolding.

“I don’t know to be honest with you,” Raymond said at the same time regarding his contract status. “I think I leave that to my agent and the people around me helping me.

“As far as when a deal will get done, I don’t know. What I do know is that I love this team, I love this city and I want to be here. But as far as the other things, it’s kind of out of my control at this point.”

Over the summer, Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde has frequently engaged Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond in conversation.

“I’ve talked to them about three times in the summer,” Lalonde said. They talk about plenty of stuff to do with the future of the team. What never comes up in those conversations, though, is the topic concern of every Red Wings fan regarding the immediate future of both players.

“We don’t even talk about the contract,” Lalonde said.

That, he reasons, is none of his business.

“This is exactly why we have the GM layer and those guys have the agent layer,” Lalonde explained. “That’s between (Detroit GM) Steve (Yzerman) and them, Steve and the agent.

“It’s been business for us and for them.”

For Lalonde, when he talks to Seider and Raymond, it’s business as usual.

“With us it’s just the same thing, the same message for all our guys,” Lalonde said. “We want to progress, we want to keep moving, keep building this. We want a little bit more than last year.

“Obviously those guys are a big part of it.”

Red Wings Lalonde Confident Deals Will Get Done

There’s no questioning how vital both Seider and Raymond are to the success of the Red Wings. Raymond was a 31-goal scorer last season. His 72 points were leading the team in scoring.

Seider led the Red Wings in time on ice (22:22) and shorthanded time on ice (2:33) per game. He’s logging those minutes in hard situations against the opposition’s best players.

“He’s going to be seeing that the rest of his career,” Lalonde said.

The big German defenseman also wound in a tie for eighth among NHL defensemen with 211 hits. He was second among NHL rearguards with 212 blocked shots.

While it might seem like the Red Wings are running out of time to get restricted free agents Seider and Raymond under contract, Lalonde is entirely confident that they will find common ground a get a deal done prior to the opening of training camp next month.

“I’m not worried,” Lalonde said. “It’s all part of it. I’ve had a little experience with this with past RFAs.

“I think it’s all part of the process.”
