Norwegian Michael Brandsegg-Nygard’s mastery over English idioms may be more challenging than learning what Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde wants out of him defensively.

“He still battles with the language barrier, which is real,” Lalonde said. “I think North American hockey is a little bit of an adjustment, a little more time and space is probably what he’s used to. I thought he did very well and improved as the camp went on (in Traverse City). He’ll get some preseason games here, which will be important.”

Even if the Red Wings send 2024 first-round pick Brandsegg-Nygard back to his Swedish team Skelleftea, their decision to bring him to training camp will have been a beneficial and educational experience.

After a practice Tuesday in Detroit, the Red Wings will start their preseason schedule Wednesday with a road game against the Chicago Blackhawks. They then play the Blackhawks Friday at Little Caesars Arena.

These preseason games are particularly important for Detroit’s top prospects, such as Marco Kasper, Nate Danielson, Carter Mazur, Albert Johansson, Amadeus Lombardi, Brandsegg-Nygard, or even Elmer Soderblom.  At 23, it seems like he needs a memorable showing over the next couple of weeks to get back to the NHL.

Trying to Earn a Role

The preseason games are also important for someone like Sheldon Dries, signed this summer with 122 games of NHL experience. He’s a candidate to become the new Austin Czarnik, a player who could play some games in Grand Rapids and be a call-up when the Red Wings have an injury. He was an 11-goal scorer in 63 games for the Vancouver Canucks in 2022-23.

“Sheldon was my captain in junior (on the Green Bay Gamblers),” Lalonde said. “I’ve been chasing him down in pro hockey for about eight years now. Finally got a GM to bite on it, in a good way. I really appreciate the player, appreciate the human being. He adds to that depth. I would be extremely comfortable in a call-up situation anytime. You can trust him at center, you can trust him at wing, you can trust him in every special teams situation. Just a really valuable person for our organization.”

The preseason game will also help Lalonde sort out what the team has with summer free agent signee Jakub Rychlovsky, who led the Czech League last season with 26 goals. Detroit also still has eight goalies in camp after Sunday’s cuts.

The Red Wings now have 57 players in camp after making 11 roster cuts on Monday.  The Red Wings cut goalie draft pick Landon Miller (126th, 2024), returning him to his Soo Greyhounds team in the Ontario Hockey League. The other players released were all on amateur tryouts: forwards Brayden Edwards, Chase Lefebvre, Charlie Paquette and Borya Valis, and defensemen Bauer Dumanski, Marcus Kearsey, Zackary Sandhu, Blake Smith, Josh Van Mulligen and Matthew Virgilio.

It’s been three days since it was reported that former Red Wings and Edmonton Oilers GM Ken Holland was in discusion for a possible role with the transplanted Utah team.

Thus far there’s no indication whether that will happen or not.

Given Holland’s years of experience, such a move would certainly make sense. There’s certainly a history of some former GMs serving in an advisory capacity. For example, former Sharks GM Doug Wilson is a senior advisor of hockey operations in Pittsburgh. Former Kings and Sharks GM Dean Lombardi is with the Philadelphia Flyers as an advisor. Former Montreal GM Marc Bergevin landed as an advisor in Los Angeles in 2022.

Even though Detroit’s fan base was disappointed in Holland at the end of his time there, he is a Hall of Fame GM who built the Red Wings into Stanley Cup champions. Experienced voices can be important for a team trying to establish a winning culture for the first time.

What we don’t know is whether is considering retirement. He is 68 and turns 69 in November.

When it comes to playing Detroit Red Wings preseason games, Ville Husso may have priority status. He should be in Group 1 when coach Derek Lalonde loads the lineup.

Husso looks fully recovered from last season’s injury problems. But he has not played a 60-minute NHL game since Dec. 12. That was more than nine months ago. He had plenty of time for rust to build up.

“He’s gonna need reps and he’s gonna need live reps and obviously we’ll get some opportunity within practice,”  Lalonde said. “..It’s something we’re conscious of as a group, not only getting him reps, but with the amount of goalies we have in rotating through, getting some really good reps and some live reps.”

Lalonde will have Sunday’s Red and White intrasquad game, plus eight preseason games to determine Husso’s readiness.

Those games are critical because Lalonde is hosting an open competition to start the season as the team’s No. 1 goalie. He has four goalies (Ville Husso, Alex Lyon, Cam Talbot and Jack Campbell) with NHL experience.

Husso, Lyon and Talbot are the prime competitors, with Campbell projecting to at least start the season in Grand Rapids. But if the Red Wings have injuries, he certainly could end up in Detroit’s mix.

“It is a true clean slate,” Lalonde said. “I think over the last two years, all three of those goalies, when I say those three goalies, we kind of have a vision. Ville, Cam and Alex have had really nice stretches in this league. Proved they can win in this league and we’ll look for one to step up. You know, Jack has obviously done that also. So obviously we have some numbers in camp, which is a little unique, but it’s a positive.”

Two Divided by Three

The Red Wings had three goalies parent club roster last season, and it worked for them. But it comes with problems in practice because there are only two nets.

“Wasn’t ideal,” Lalonde said. “That same question you had on some reps and getting the nets at times. But again, it saved our season. So it’s going to be a healthy competition. It’s going to be wide open and it’s a clean slate.”

Husso said Saturday that he was feeling good.

“It’s always, always tough not playing, especially last year, that second injury, kind of like you just want to get out there and then you’re not ready to go,” Husso said. “But at least I got some extra time this summer rehabbing and training and stuff. So. Feel good now and excited to play some preseason games. “

Husso passed the eye test with those who saw him in the informal summer skates and the opening two days of training camp.

Having him on the ice this summer, he’s looking good, he’s back healthy,” Red Wings Alex DeBrincat said. “I think you maybe have to talk to him about how he feels, but he looks good.”

DeBrincat has seen indications of Husso being his pre-injury self.

“I think he’s back to hard to score on in practice, always battling, and I think those are the goalies that are maybe the most fun to play on in practice,” DeBrincat said. “Cause they’re always, they’re not gonna let you just put it in the net on a rebound or whatever. They’re always fighting for that rebound. He’s looked great so far. I’m excited to have him back. Hopefully, he has a little bit better luck with injuries this year, so I think he’ll be a big part of our team.

When you listen to GM Steve Yzerman discuss Jonatan Berggren, it’s clear that the Swedish forward’s lack of time in with the Detroit Red Wings last season didn’t reflect a lack of faith in his ability.

“We’re really  pleased with how he played down the stretch,” Yzerman said. “It was a tough year for him. He was up and down a little bit and probably more than he preferred. But he worked hard every time he went back to GR.”

Berggren, 24, generated 24 goals and 56 points in 53 games for the Griffins. That included seven goals and 14 points in his final 13 games of the season. He also totaled five goals and 10 points in nine playoff games.

Last season, the Red Wings took advantage of the fact that Berggren was waiver-exempt. They could send him back and forth to the minors without fear of losing him. They also had enough scoring last season. That’s changes this season.

“Feeling like this is a year for me to prove I belong in this league,” Berggren said. “So yeah, my focus on training camp is just coming with a great attitude and show them what player I am and how big of summer I had.”

It was emotionally challenging for Berggren to stay positive when he couldn’t stick with Detroit.

“It been a little bit tough. I will not lie,” Berggren said on the opening day of training camp in Traverse City.  Going up and down. Basically living in my car, me and my girlfriend. So it was. I think looking back at it, it was a grow a lot and mentally strong and stuff. …But I think it will help me in the long (run).”

The Red Wings aren’t just hoping Berggren will produce this season — they need him to produce, to be a significant offensive contributor. Daniel Sprong (18 goals), Robby Fabbri (18) and David Perron (17) were Detroit’s fifth-, sixth- and seventh-highest scoring  forwards last season. All three are gone through either a trade or free agency.

Vladimir Tarasenko will replace one of those forwards and Berggren needs to replace another.

Berggren’s career NHL numbers say he can certainly accomplish that. Over two seasons, Berggren has played 79 games (the equivalent of close to a full NHL season) and has netted 17 goals.

“He’s a smart hockey player,” Yzerman said. “He’s got good skills and it’s just the ability to do it at the NHL level. And he’s shown in some of the his call ups, brief periods that he’s called up that he has the ability and the hockey sense to play in the NHL.”

Pivotal Season

Yzerman recently reached an agreement with Berggren on a one-year contract for $825,000. Both the team and players were fine with that.

“We talked about one or two years,” Yzerman said. “Ultimately, with one player remaining unsigned, knowing what the salary cap is, probably weren’t in a position at this time to do a two-year deal… And if Jonathan goes out and has a solid season, he’s in a very good spot to renegotiate after one year. So you know what he needs to do? Just be a good hockey player in all areas of the aspects of the game, offensively, defensively.”

Berggren has been working out in Detroit lately.

“He looks like he’s worked really hard this summer,” Yzerman said. “He’s in good shape… He’s worked hard, he’s been patient and get a good opportunity this year. Pretty confident that he’ll be a positive influence on our team.”

If you are a Detroit Red Wings fan wondering how the team’s goaltending rotation will unfold this fall, know that GM Steve Yzerman is wondering the same.

“Let’s just see how things go,” Yzerman said as he discussed Thursday’s start of Red Wings training camp in Traverse City,

The Red Wings are holding an open competition in training camp for four NHL experienced goalies — Jack Campbell, Ville Husso, Alex Lyon and Cam Talbot — all looking for playing time.

“That’s not a decision we have to make today,” Yzerman said. “We went with three goaltenders last year, and Ville was pretty much hurt virtually all season. You know, it’s not an ideal situation to carry three, but potentially, if we have to do that one, I want to make sure Ville Husso is 100% healthy and playing. And today he is. But he hasn’t played a game situation in a long time. So we want to see him how he does in the preseason and we’ll reevaluate this thing as we go along. But if I have to, if we have to, we’ll manage with three goaltenders.”

Heath Concern

Open competition or not, Yzerman obviously has thoughts about what he expects, or wants, to happen. But he’s not someone who tips his hand.

The Red Wings have concerns about Husso’s health.  It doesn’t seem like Yzerman would have signed 37-year-old veteran Talbot if he didn’t expect him to play a role.  Talbot played well last season for the Los Angeles Kings. Also, Jack Campbell’s reputation of being a good guy, a first-rate citizen makes him an ideal option to pair with young Sebastian Cossa in Grand Rapids.

But Yzerman wants to see where everyone is at in training camp. He is keeping an open mind. “We’ll wait to see how things play out,” Yzerman said.

Yzerman has more pressing matters like finalizing a new deal with Moritz Seider for a new contract. Now that Lucas Raymond is done, Seider is clearly his top priority. Yzerman has $8.75 million remaining under the salary cap.  We can all guess that Yzerman would prefer not to pay Seider more than captain Dylan Larkin ($8.7 million).

” I don’t think we’re terribly far apart, but we’ll see,” Yzerman said. “Hopefully we can progress to getting them here as soon as possible.”

Once Seider signs, Yzerman will have full roster of veterans, plus big, gritty forward Austin Watson on a PTO. Yzerman will have to carve out space if a rookie like Marco Kasper or Nate Danielson or Michael Brandsegg-Nygard earns a place on the team.

“Every player that’s coming into training camp here, whether they’re on a PTO or ATO for that matter, a first year pro, I think deep down inside they have hope: “Hey, I’m going to impress those guys enough that they’re going to think about keeping me,” Yzerman said.

Is There Room for Rookies?

Yzerman has been clear since he arrived in Detroit that a prospect has to earn a place on the roster. If he does that, Yzerman will find a place on the roster.

Raymond is trying to get to Traverse City as soon as possible. If Seider signs quickly, Yzerman doesn’t anticipate any problem getting work visas for either.

“We have a plan in place,” Yzerman said. “They’re currently on their old visas, and as long as you apply for a new visa while a player is under an existing visa, I think you can expedite. It pretty quickly becomes an issue for a player if their visa is expired.”

The Red Wings will culminate their training camp with the Red and White intrasquad game on Sunday afternoon. Detroit’s preseasons schedule starts, Wednesday, Sept. 25 in Chicago at 8 p.m., ET. The first home preseason game is Friday at 7 p.m. against the Blackhawks.

TRAVERSE CITY– The Detroit Red Wings knew it wouldn’t take long for Michael Brandsegg-Nygard to establish his presence in their two-game NHL Prospect Series against the Dallas Stars.

But they probably didn’t foresee it taking only three seconds.

That’s how long the Norwegian winger (drafted 15th, 2024) needed to race down the ice after the opening faceoff to hammer Dallas defenseman Luke Krys behind the net. The Red Wings drafted him with the idea that he will mature into a top six scoring forward. But when you watch him play, it’s clear he’s a full service performer. He showed that in the Red Wings’ 5-1 win in Game 1 of the series. The two teams will play again Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

“He’s a big body, plays heavy,” Red Wings coach Dan Watson said.

Brandsegg-Nygard, who played for his native Norway in last spring at the World Championships, has more poise than you would expect for a teenager. There’s still much to learn, but there’s no panic in him.

“I thought he had a good game,” Red Wings coach Dan Watson said. “I thought he made some really smart plays, especially that one in a third. Good patience coming out of our zone. Made a cross ice pass tape to tape to someone in stride. He’s physical in the right spots.”

Shot a Game-Changer

Watson had a instant recommendation for Brandsegg-Nygard, based on the idea that he needs to take advantage of his best skill.

“One thing I’d like to see him do is get open, try to get some more opportunities to shoot the puck,” Watson said. “He has an absolute bomb and we have to do a good job or a better job of trying to find him some more opportunities to shoot that puck.”

It’s hard not to notice that Brandsegg-Nygard can be a long-range bomber.

“The first thing that pops is that shot,” teammate Amadeus Lombardi said, “especially off the left side, his one-timer side.”

It’s a wicked drive, aided by a quick release. He wired a shot in the third period that earned him an assist on a goal by Jakub Rychlovsky, the Czech free agent acquisition.

“There’s probably an adjustment from the big ice to small ice. I think that gets talked about all, all the time, just some wall play early on,” Watson said. “But then he figured it out quick, which means he’s a smart player. So I liked his game here tonight.”

Yamamoto came to Detroit in the Klim Kostin trade with the Oilers, but he never played for the Red Wings. The Red Wings chose to buy him out. He played for the Kraken last season. The Red Wings still have a final season of a $533,000 salary cap hit for Yamamoto’s buyout still on their books.

Previously, former Detroit players Gustav Lindstrom and Mark Pysyk signed PTOs with Anaheim and Adam Erne joined the New York Rangers on a tryout agreement.

The increasing desire by NHL general managers to reform the NHL’s LTIR system doesn’t mean this would be an easy fix.

LTIR (Long Term Injured Reserve) is designed to provide relief to NHL teams overrun by injuries.  A player who will miss 10 games and 24 days can be placed on LTIR. This gives teams the chance to replace those players by going beyond the salary cap limits. However, teams must be salary cap compliant when they activate the player.

The issues that bothers many GMs is how some teams have been using the LTIR to gain a playoff advantage.

With no salary cap restrictions in the playoffs, teams can activate an LTIR without getting cap compliant. In several instances, players who weren’t deemed healthy to return to active duty during the regular season, which would have forced the team to get compliant with their salary, suddenly get healthy for the playoffs.  The LTIR player can play Game 1, and team can carry a roster well beyond the salary cap limit.

Playoff Advantage

In the playoffs, some teams have ended up with whopping salary cap advantages in the postseason.

Sportsnet talked to Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly for a story about the issue. Daly told Sportsnet that a fix isn’t as simple as extending the salary cap constraints into the postseason

“So you can pick up an expensive contract at the end of its term and your cap only gets charged a certain amount,” Daly told. “But all of a sudden if that $1 million, say, you assume becomes $5 million on Game 1 of the playoffs and you can’t play that player as a result, I’m not sure that’s a fair result because teams complied within the rules.”

A change would require opening the CBA, which expires after the 2025-26 season. The NHL has informed the NHL Players Association about GM concerns, but Daly said he is not sure how players feel about it.

Wings In Case You Missed It

A handful of former Red Wings are in training camps on PTOs. Adam Erne is with the New York Rangers, Matt Luff is with the Florida Panthers and Gus Lindstrom and Mark Pysyk are wit the Anaheim Ducks.

Former Red Wings forward Taro Hirose signs with Munich Red Bull in German League.

Axel Sandin Pellikka is coming off the Skelleftea injury list in Champions League Play.

Red Wings Offseason

In case you have lost that of the Grand Rapids Griffins comings and goings, know that Josiah Didier is back on defense and as the team’s captain. Also, Tyler Spezia has signed with the Toledo Walleye. He had spent five seasons with the Griffins.

Three former Detroit Red Wings who have failed to find work for the 2024-25 season have at least secured what amounts to an NHL job interview.

Matt Luff signed a PTO withe Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, while defensemen Gustav Lindstrom and Mark Pysyk secured the same pro tryout agreement with the Anaheim Ducks.

Luff, 27, has played 106 NHL games, including 19 for the Red Wings in 2022-23. The Red Wings appreciated his 6-foot-2 size and work ethic. When he was down the Grand Rapids Griffins, he was also an impact player. In 54 games for the Griffins over two years, he shows 18 goals and 43 points.

The only negative about Luff is he is unlucky when it comes to injuries. But he has the tools to be an effective bottom six forward with enough skill to chip in goals now and then.

Lindstrom is only 25, and played for the Ducks last season. Maybe the Ducks are waiting to see how their defense looks at the end of training camp.

Pysyk, 32, hasn’t played in the NHL since 2021-22. He was on Detroit’s roster with a signed contract, but never actually played for the team because of an Achilles injury. Last season, he played 37 AHL games.

Players sign PTO agreements with the hope of persuading the team to sign them. But they also just want to play preseason games to remind every team in the league they are available and ready to play.

The Red Wings have one noteworthy PTO player: Michigan native Austin Watson, 32, a hard-nosed, 240-pound left wing who played for the Tampa Bay Lightning last season. He has played for three NHL teams (Nashville, Ottawa and Tampa Bay)

Jakub Rychlovsky is planning for Grand Rapids and dreaming about Detroit. His Czech coach doesn’t believe his aspirations are unrealistic.

“I’ll be happy if he stays, but (Rychlovsky) is a player for the NHL,” said his Liberec coach Filip Pesan. “…I think he deserves all of the attention he’s getting now. Dozens of scouts watched him during the season.”

Bob Duff wrote this week that Rychlovsky worked out diligently all summer to be ready for his NHL opportunity. The Red Wings signed him after he led the Czech Extraliga with 26 goals.

“I trained for four months. It was probably my longest preparation in my career,” Rychlovsky told Czech website iDnes.cz. “I think I prepared well. Now it’s just up to me to show myself in the best possible light in Detroit and leave a good first impression.”

Rychlovsky has done his homework about what happens to Detroit prospects.

“If you look at the history of how Detroit has handled players, they have mostly sent them to the farm,” Rychlovsky acknowledges. “So my journey will probably lead there too. But anything can happen.

“I will do my best to fight my way into the first team.”

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

The agent for Lucas Raymond said it’s still possible to get a new contract for him before training camp, but it has to be “reasonable.”

Defenseman Anton Johansson, a Red Wings prospect, scored a pair of goals in a Swedish Hockey League game.

Take the Red Wings quiz. It will help if you know which Red Wings player had a role in a movie that starred Frank Sinatra. Bob Duff created this fun exercise.

Red Wings Offseason

The New York Rangers have signed ex-Red Wings forward Adam Erne to a PTO deal for their training camp. He played 24 games last season for the Edmonton Oilers.
