When the Swedish roster was revealed for the upcoming World Junior Summer Showcase, the name of Detroit Red Wings 2023 draftee Noah Dower Nilsson was missing. The reason for his absence is now becoming apparent.

According to a report from Henrik Leman of Rackapucker.com, Dower Nilsson, selected 73rd overall by Detroit, recently underwent shoulder surgery and will be out of action for at least two months.

Dower Nilsson missed the final day of Red Wings development camp while he and his older brother, 2021 Detroit draftee Liam Dower Nilsson (134th overall), were both undergoing upper body imaging.

“Liam and Noah went to get some imaging done on their upper body,” Red Wings director of player development Dan Cleary said at the time. “They just had to get some imaging done. It’s just easier to get it done here so we could see it. You just don’t want anything down the road. That’s all it was.”

Evidently, in Noah’s case, they found something that was causing alarm and ultimately, was rectified via surgery.

Big Season For Red Wings Pick

During the 2022-23 campaign, the younger of the Dower Nilsson brothers got his first taste of playing against men. He saw three games of action with Frolunda in the SHL and made his debut skating alongside his older brother.

“It was pretty cool,” Noah recalled. “It’s fun to be out there. It was a little bit nervous but it was fun.”

Frolunda is in a transition phase in terms of the club roster, and there’s opportunity for Noah, 18, to grab some ice time at forward. That being the case, the shoulder surgery could prove even more problemitic.

While in Detroit, Noah was admitting that he does have shoulder issues that he’s been dealing with for much of last season. He spent some time on the shelf due to a shoulder ailment.

“Yeah, it was tough,” Noah said. “It was my shoulder. Popped out for the first time. It was tough. Rehab, seven weeks.

“Then I come back and it feels good. Both shoulders are a little bit not so good.”

Apparently, not so good that surgery was required to fix the problem.

(Editor’s Note: This is the latest installment in Detroit Hockey Now updates of some of the Detroit Red Wings’ top prospects)

There’s no disputing the 2023-24 season will be critical for Shai Buium, a defenseman who was a second-round pick (No. 36 overall) in 2021.

Buium, who will be a junior at the University of Denver, says working on the little things will be key to his improvement as a player and a prospect.

“Obviously, winning a national championship will be a team focus,” said Buium, who played on the Pioneers’ 2022 NCAA championship team. “For me personally, it’s staying on the little things during the season, like skating every day and doing the edge-work stuff we do here (at the recent Red Wings Prospects Development Camp). That stuff is going to help me make it to the NHL, so seeing to that stuff and keep working hard in the gym.”

Buium’s Brother Top 2024 prospect.

Buium is a 6-3, 205-pound native of San Diego whose parents are from Israel. He was introduced to hockey by a cousin while growing up. He’s not the only hockey player in his family. His brother Zeev, who will be a freshman at Denver this winter, is considered a top prospect in next year’s draft.

Dan Cleary, the Red Wings’s director of player development, is bullish on Shai Buium’s progress at Denver.

“I think Shai’s made good strides,” he said. “You have to give these kids some time to figure it out and kind of like, whether it’s learning from their mistakes or trial and error. I feel Shai’s a good player. He’s got good size. Got good hands, it’s an important season. He’s going to have his brother in Denver with him as well, so that will be nice.”

Buium is back in Denver working out with teammates and concentrating on hockey this summer. Instead, he plans to concentrate on things like nutrition and proper rest  by the time team workouts begin in September

‘I’ve learned one of the big things is getting enough hours of sleep every night,’ he said. “They talk about the more you get used to getting to bed earlier your body will get used to waking up earlier. Little things like stepping outside and seeing daylight first thing in the morning is really good for you. So applying those little things really make a big change.”

Analysis

This is a crucial season for Buium, where the Wings hope he can further develop into the player they were hoping for when they took him early in the second round in 2022. The Red Wings have plenty of quality young defensemen, led by Simon Edvinsson. The Red Wings are looking for Buium to show that he belongs among the top prospect defensemen.

Forecast

The Red Wings expect him to spend more time on special teams this winter. His overall progress will go a long way to determining his future with the team. Three seasons in college should be enough time to ready him for the pro game.

The Detroit Red Wings, as a general rule, don’t go into great detail about how they feel about their prospects. They don’t gush about young players. It’s not Steve Yzerman’s thing, and not the Red Wings’ thing.

But if you listen to Art Regner’s Red and White Authority podcast interview with Detroit’s Director of Player Development Dan Cleary you get the impression that the Red Wings are quite pleased with how well their top prospects are performing.

Cleary said Sebastian Cossa took “huge strides” this season.  The Red Wings appreciate the amount of work he puts into his game. “The thing these kids have to learn,” Cleary said, “is that the (past season) that’s last year…you’ve got to keep wanting, wanting, wanting.”

Edvinsson Update

Cleary gave a minor medical update on Simon Edvinsson, saying that he was scheduled to be in Detroit this past weekend to have his shoulder looked at by Detroit’s doctors. He is also expected to return to Detroit in July to do his rehabilitation in preparation for next season.

Kasper also was scheduled to be in Detroit as he continues to recover from last season’s injury.

“He’s a very driven, very dedicated, humble, hard-working kid,” Cleary told Regner.

Asked whether Kasper could start the season in Detroit, Cleary said “it’s a big ask.” But he didn’t rule it out.

Cleary is bullish on Carter Mazur. He likes that he’s already strong on his skates and a gamer.

“I have high expectations for Maz,” Cleary said, adding “He’s impressive player. He’s old school, he’s competitive. ”

Red Wings’ Offseason

If the Tampa Bay Lightning decide to move restricted free agent Ross Colton, it wouldn’t be surprising if GM Steve Yzerman was interested. He is a hard-nosed player who has 38 goals over the past two season.
