When it comes to playing Detroit Red Wings preseason games, Ville Husso may have priority status. He should be in Group 1 when coach Derek Lalonde loads the lineup.

Husso looks fully recovered from last season’s injury problems. But he has not played a 60-minute NHL game since Dec. 12. That was more than nine months ago. He had plenty of time for rust to build up.

“He’s gonna need reps and he’s gonna need live reps and obviously we’ll get some opportunity within practice,”  Lalonde said. “..It’s something we’re conscious of as a group, not only getting him reps, but with the amount of goalies we have in rotating through, getting some really good reps and some live reps.”

Lalonde will have Sunday’s Red and White intrasquad game, plus eight preseason games to determine Husso’s readiness.

Those games are critical because Lalonde is hosting an open competition to start the season as the team’s No. 1 goalie. He has four goalies (Ville Husso, Alex Lyon, Cam Talbot and Jack Campbell) with NHL experience.

Husso, Lyon and Talbot are the prime competitors, with Campbell projecting to at least start the season in Grand Rapids. But if the Red Wings have injuries, he certainly could end up in Detroit’s mix.

“It is a true clean slate,” Lalonde said. “I think over the last two years, all three of those goalies, when I say those three goalies, we kind of have a vision. Ville, Cam and Alex have had really nice stretches in this league. Proved they can win in this league and we’ll look for one to step up. You know, Jack has obviously done that also. So obviously we have some numbers in camp, which is a little unique, but it’s a positive.”

Two Divided by Three

The Red Wings had three goalies parent club roster last season, and it worked for them. But it comes with problems in practice because there are only two nets.

“Wasn’t ideal,” Lalonde said. “That same question you had on some reps and getting the nets at times. But again, it saved our season. So it’s going to be a healthy competition. It’s going to be wide open and it’s a clean slate.”

Husso said Saturday that he was feeling good.

“It’s always, always tough not playing, especially last year, that second injury, kind of like you just want to get out there and then you’re not ready to go,” Husso said. “But at least I got some extra time this summer rehabbing and training and stuff. So. Feel good now and excited to play some preseason games. “

Husso passed the eye test with those who saw him in the informal summer skates and the opening two days of training camp.

Having him on the ice this summer, he’s looking good, he’s back healthy,” Red Wings Alex DeBrincat said. “I think you maybe have to talk to him about how he feels, but he looks good.”

DeBrincat has seen indications of Husso being his pre-injury self.

“I think he’s back to hard to score on in practice, always battling, and I think those are the goalies that are maybe the most fun to play on in practice,” DeBrincat said. “Cause they’re always, they’re not gonna let you just put it in the net on a rebound or whatever. They’re always fighting for that rebound. He’s looked great so far. I’m excited to have him back. Hopefully, he has a little bit better luck with injuries this year, so I think he’ll be a big part of our team.

Detroit eighth NHL team for Talbot, Gustafsson

On the surface, playing in the NHL for the Detroit Red Wings seems like a great job. And for the most part, it certainly is just that.

There’s the adulation, the fame, the chance to play a children’s game for a living and you get summers off. Oh, and the money’s not bad, either.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t pitfalls along the way.

Consider two of the newest Red Wings, for instance. Both goaltender Cam Talbot and defenseman Erik Gustafsson were unrestricted free agent signings. For each of them, Detroit will be their eighth NHL stop. They were even crossing paths previously for 17 games with the 2019-20 Calgary Flames.

“You never really get used to it,” Talbot said of the packing and unpacking. “I can tell you that much.”

For Gustafsson, the Red Wings are his eighth team in the past six seasons.

“It’s been a lot of teams, but it’s always fun to get an opportunity on a new team, an Original Six team, too,” Gustafsson said of arriving in Detroit. “It’s always a challenge to come in as a new guy.”

In Talbot’s case, the Red Wings are his seventh team in eight seasons.

“I seem to be part of it every summer,” he said of the NHL transactions wire. “It’s really nerve-wracking.

“It has been a bit of a whirlwind lately, moving from team to team.”

Red Wings Players Think About Family Impact

For the player, changing teams is impactful.

“I think every experience is different,” Gustafsson said. “I don’t want to come in and be the voice of the room right away.

“It’s something you have to learn and read, too.”

At the same time, there’s a group of guys awaiting them in their new dressing room who succinctly understand the lifestyle and are ready and willing to make the adjustment as seamless as possible. The newcomers are quickly assimilated into the team culture.

“It’s easy, the hockey part,” Talbot said. “You can kind of plug in and play. Guys always integrate you into the team.”

That isn’t necessarily the case for the rest of the family. Spouses are left to deal with the headaches of moving. Children must switch schools and say goodbye to their friends. It can be a very traumatic experience for a youngster.

“You never really fully get used to it, especially with a young family now,” Talbot said. “Taking the kids out of school and moving them all the time, having to leave their friends, that’s the hardest part for me.

“My kids have been troopers, but hopefully I’ve found a spot for a couple of years here and we’ll be able to kind of settle down a little bit.”

Detroit Stability Appealing To Kane

It was that latter notion that was playing a role in Patrick Kane’s decision to re-up with the Red Wings rather than test the UFA waters on July 1.

For his first 16 NHL seasons, Kane was with the Chicago Blackhawks. Since February 28, 2023, he’s become somewhat of a vagabond. Kane was moving to the Arizona Coyotes in a paper transaction, then on to the New York Rangers and finally, the Red Wings.

Stability, the opportunity to again put down roots in one location, was appealing to him.

“I think just we were looking back on kind of what I’ve been through and what the family has been through in the past 18-plus months,” Kane admitted. “I mean, obviously you’re in Chicago for whatever it was, 16 or 17 years, and then I had go to New York for a couple months.

“Then I had the (hip) surgery and I was rehabbing in Toronto. And then you have to pick a new team. And I went to Detroit and I was there for 50 games. All that happened within 18 months.

“So, even if I did a one-year deal, it wasn’t like it was gonna seem very short or anything like that, especially with what we’ve been through.”

Veteran goalie could be Cossa's mentor

Certainly, Cam Talbot could be of great help to the Detroit Red Wings next season. He’s coming off an all-star campaign with the Los Angeles Kings. Talbot’s numbers suggest he’ll be more consistent and reliable between the pipes than any of the netminders the team used last season.

Secondly, there’s the second year on Talbot’s two-year contract that the UFA signed with Detroit. His role in 2025-26 could very well be to introduce 2021 first-round draftee Sebastian Cossa to the show and educate him on the rigors of NHL puckstopping.

Last season with the Kings, Talbot saw action in 54 games, going 27-20-6 and earning the nod as a Pacific Division selection for the NHL All-Star Game. His save percentage was .913 and GAA 2.50. By contrast, the Red Wings were posting a team save percentage of .897 and a GAA of 3.33.

“I think he’ll be an important part,” Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman said of his expectations for Talbot. “I can’t tell you how many starts they’re all going to get but he had a very good year in Los Angeles.

“Two years ago in Ottawa he had some injuries but his numbers are really consistent.”

Talbot Ready To Compete For Red Wings Net

The 36-year-old netminder’s career GAA is 2.63, along with a .914 save percentage. Last season marked the fourth time in his career that Talbot would play in 50+ games.

“Really solid, big guy, competitive guy who’s had a relatively strong career,” Yzerman said of the 6-foot-4, 200-pound puckstopper. “I expect his save percentage to help and reduce the number of goals against. Collectively as a team our play has to pick up on that side.

“If we can creep our overall goaltending save percentage up a little bit that should contribute to fewer goals against.”

Red Wings Four Deep In NHL Goalies

Detroit was adding two veteran NHL goalies this summer. The Red Wings were also signing Jack Campbell. He and Talbot join Alex Lyon and Ville Husso on the roster. That’s giving Detroit four goalies with 80+ games of NHL experience.

With 486 NHL games on his resume, Talbot isn’t afraid to face such a challenge. In fact, he embraces the opportunity to compete for the net.

“I’m sure there will be a good healthy competition come training camp,” Talbot said. “That internal competition always makes everybody better. I think that bringing in the guys that they brought in just drives everybody that much more.

“That’s a good thing for everybody.”

Make no mistake, Talbot’s mission in Hockeytown is to be the go-to goalie for the Red Wings.

“Absolutely,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons why I chose to sign here. There’s gonna be the competition no matter what between three three or four of us. I feel healthy and good even at my age.

“I played 54 games last year, made an All-Star appearance. And I still feel like I’ve got a lot to give. That’s one of the biggest reasons why I wanted a two-year deal to come in and try to help a team win and still come in and compete for starts. That’s a big factor for me coming in.”

Veteran Goalie Accepting Of Mentor Role

At the same time, Talbot is understanding that the sands of time on his days as an effective NHL goalie are dwindling. Netminders excelling well into their late 30s are the exception and not the rule.

The Red Wings are embracing the notion that Cossa, 21, chosen 15th overall in the 2021 NHL entry draft, as their goalie of the future. That future, in terms of arrival, figures to be the 2025-26 campaign, which would be the second year of term on Talbot’s pact with Detroit.

If he’s to be Cossa’s mentor, it’s a role that Talbot would be willingly embracing.

“I really enjoy it,” Talbot said of working with young goalies. “I think that’s a huge part of the game now. Obviously when I was coming into the league I had Henrik Lundqvist and Marty Biron on the team in New York when I was there coming to training camps (with the Rangers), so I saw first hand what it took and what it was like to be an NHLer every single day.

“You take that and mold it into your game when you’re in the minors. And when you make it, that’s when the work really starts. You realize that watching a future Hall of Famer like I was able to do (with Lundqvist). You take it all in and you just try to be like a sponge and just absorb things that you see him doing and mold it into your game, or mold it into your off-ice routines and stuff like that.

“For me to get to this point in my career and hopefully be able to help young guys like I was helped, it’ll be nice to give that experience back.”

The Detroit Red Wings had to adapt on the fly last season when it came to their goalies.

They started  the season with Ville Husso as the unquestioned starter and Alex Lyon languishing on the bench.

After Husso suffered the first of several lower-body injuries, James Reimer temporarily took on a bigger role, only to give way to Lyon before Reimer made a couple of key starts at the end of the season.

In this year’s goalies picture, Reimer is gone, having signed with the Buffalo Sabres as a free agent. The Red Wings also, as of now, have moved on from Michael Hutchinson, who played in one game with them last season while spending the rest of the season in Grand Rapids. He’s a free agent.

The Wings have two solid prospects in net in Sebastian Cossa and Michigan State goalie Trey Augustine. Neither are expected to be ready for at least one year (Cossa) or two (Augustine).

They’ve added two goalies in the offseason: Cam Talbot, late of the Los Angeles Kings, and Jack Campbell, who flamed out spectacularly after signing a huge contract with Edmonton.

Here’s a look at each of the Wings’ goalies:

Cam Talbot

Age: 37

Height:  6-4 Weight: 200

NHL Experience: 11 seasons

Last year: 2.50 GAA, .913 save percentage, 27-20-6 record

Talbot signed a two-year deal with the Red Wings and brings a solid resume to Detroit. He struggled in the Kings’ loss to Edmonton in the first round of the playoffs, with a 5.30 GAA. But he likely won’t face an offense like the Oilers all that often in the Eastern Conference. One area of concern is Talbot’s age. The Wings are counting on Talbot’s ability so far to avoid injury, which can become problematic the closer a player gets to 40. If he can stay off then injured list and play to his career totals of 2.63 GAA and a .913 save percentage, he will make a bid to be No. 1. The Red Wings would like to see him grab the No. 1 spot. The Red Wings would like to see anyone grab the starter’s job and play consistently well.

Ville Husso

Age: 29

Height: 6-3 Weight :205

NHL Experience: 4 seasons

Last year: 3.55 GAA, .892 save percentage, 9-5-2 record

Husso started the season as the Wings’ No. 1 goalie, then suffered lower-body injuries that limited him to one game after Christmas. If Husso can avoid a recurrence of those injuries this season, he still will have to improve on his numbers during his two seasons in Detroit to enhance the team’s fortunes. With a cap number of $4.75 million, he’ll have to improve to stay with the Red Wings after his contract expires next summer.

Alex Lyon

Age: 31

Height: 6-1 Weight: 195

NHL Experience: 7 seasons

Last year: 3:05 GAA, .904 save percentage, 21-18-5 record

Lyon hadn’t played more than 15 NHL games in a season before last year, and started the season anchored to the bench. But he bided his time and made the most of his opportunity. He could be trade bait for both his performance and his salary ($900,000 on an expiring contract). He also end up as Detroit’s No. 1 goalie or the primary backup. It’s difficult to project where Detroit’s goaltending will play out. But the Red Wings appreciate what Lyon did for the team last season and he will get a chance to prove he can be the guy.

Jack Campbell

Age: 32

Height: 6-3 Weight: 2

NHL Experience: 9 season

Last season:  At Bakersfield (AHL) 2.63 GAA, .918 save percentage, 18-13-1 record

Campbell is a Port Huron native who is both well-traveled and experienced in the ups and downs of professional hockey. He went from making the All-Star team in 2022 with Toronto to being sent to the minors by Edmonton last fall. His fall was precipitous, going from a $5,000,000 deal with the Oilers to $775,000 with the Wings. Campbell is looking for a fresh start in Detroit that will likely begin in Grand Rapids, where he will also team with Cossa as Hutchinson did last year. Campbell is a longshot to play in Detroit, but could boost his prospects elsewhere with a strong season.

The Red Wings were one point short of qualifying for the playoffs in 2023-24. Every Detroit coach, player and member of management probably thought initially about a game, a play, or a moment where the group could have earned that needed point.

But everyone has moved on, and today it feels as if a much bigger effort will be required in 2024-25 for the Red Wings to avoid missing the playoffs for a ninth consecutive season.

Teams below them in the Atlantic Division standings are improving. Detroit’s salary cap outlook isn’t as favorable. The Red Wings lost players they wanted to keep. It’s plausible they could take a half-step backwards if they don’t take their game to the next level.

Here are five requirements for the Red Wings to compete for a playoff spot next season:

 Tighten Defensive Coverage

Last season, 17 NHL teams gave 252 or fewer goals over 82 games. They all had a 3.02 team GAA or better.  Thirteen of those teams qualified for the playofs. The Red Wings have a good understanding of what they can do this season to improve their playoff chances.

Getting in the top half of the GAA seems like a “must” for this team. The team’s overall defensive coverage has to improve or they will miss the playoffs for a ninth consecutive season.

It feels as if they made some strides in defensive coverage last season, but numbers say it was negligible. They gave up 275 goals in Derek Lalonde’s first season and 273 last season. Their 11-point improvement resulted primarly from offensive improvement (particularly on the power play).

To make the playoffs, must set their sights on reducing goals against to 250. That will require a restructuring of how the team plays.

Emergence of No. 1 Goalie

Alex Lyon, Ville Husso and James Reimer moments each last season, but none showed the consistency a coach wants to see from a No. 1.

GM Steve Yzerman added two veteran NHL goalies (Cam Talbot and Jack Campbell) in the name of upgrading the position. The Red Wings need one of the goalies to show enough consistency to earn 50-55 starts. Maybe the best bet is Talbot. This is a similar to the situation he faced last season in Los Angeles.  Phoenix Copley was the projected starter, but the Kings brought in veterans Talbot and Rittich. Talbot won the job. He played sharp enough to be named to play in the All-Star game.

He boasted a 2.50 goals-against average and .913 save percentage. Talbot owns a career .914 save percentage. Last season, the Red Wings didn’t have a goalie with a save percentage below 3.00 and Lyon led the team with a .904 save percentage.

It doesn’t have to be Talbot, but someone has to step up and be more consistent than Detroit’s goaltending was last season.

Don’t Allow Scoring to Decline

The loss of Shayne Gostisbehere, David Perron and Daniel Sprong through free agency, and Jake Walman and Robby Fabbri through trades, means Detroit lost 75 goals.

The addition of Vladimir Tarasenko might regain 25-30, and Patrick Kane, providing he stays healthy, could add five to seven goals more than he did last season. The hope is Jonatan Berggren can produce 15-plus goals as well. Erik Gustafsson and Simon Edvinsson might add 10 between them. Can Alex DeBrincat score more?

But they could end up scoring less if they don’t find improvement elsewhere. Detroit’s 278 goals last season ranked ninth in the league. That was a 38-goal increase from the previous season. The Red Wings will have to work to draw close to 278 goals. Weaker scoring teams have difficulty making the playoffs.

Road Warrior Mentality

The Detroit Red Wings registered three more points at home than the Toronto Maple Leafs earned in their home arena. But the Maple Leafs played much better on the road and finished 11 points ahead of Detroit in the final standings.

Every NHL playoff team put up a better road record than Detroit’s mark of 18-19-4.

Winning on the road often comes down to goaltending, defensive commitment and the power play.  There’s no reason to believe that Detroit’s power play won’t be as productive (ninth in the NHL, 23.1%) as it was last season.  Earning more points on the road is a must.

More Emphasis on Pushback

Ideally, the Red Wings would have brought in a couple of bigger forwards. Bt Yzerman didn’t have the cap space (or roster spots) to add more size and tenacity. But Simon Edvinsson is 6-foot-6 and we can guess his physical game will expand as gains more experience.

The projected fourth line of Christian Fischer, Joe Veleno and Tyler Motte could be a prickly unit . It’s not unthinkable that they could total 380 to 400 hits among them. This will be a high energy trio.

Justin Holl may end up playing more and he had 151 hits in his last season in Toronto. Tarasenko isn’t a big hitter, but he is 220 pounds and he’s challenging to move. He can protect the puck.

This team may be modestly harder to play against. That will help in their playoff push.

If you find yourself in the vicinity of Little Caesars Arena in early September and happen across a confident fellow striding purposefully toward the facility, say about 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, you might just be crossing paths with new Detroit Red Wings goalie Cam Talbot.

Talbot is arriving in Hockeytown as a man on a mission to make the Red Wings goal crease his personal property.

“Absolutely,” Talbot, 36, declared. “That’s one of the reasons why I chose to sign here. There’s gonna be the competition no matter what between three three or four of us.

“I feel healthy and good even at my age.”

Signed to a two-year, $5 million deal as a UFA, Talbot is coming off a solid season with the Los Angeles Kings. While posting a .913 save percentage and 2.50 GAA, he was also earning the Pacific Division nod for the NHL All-Star Game.

“I played 54 games last year, made an All-Star appearance,” Talbot said. “I still feel like I got a lot to give.

“That’s one of the biggest reasons why I wanted a two-year deal to come in and try to help a team win and still come in and compete for starts. That’s a big factor for me coming in.”

Red Wings Have Four NHL Goalies

Detroit GM Steve Yzerman was also signing NHL veteran Jack Campbell as a free agent. He and Talbot will join holdovers Alex Lyon and Ville Husso in the battle for goaltending spots with the Red Wings.

On the surface, there seems little to choose between the four puckstoppers. They’re all journeymen, with not much in the way of steady success on any of their NHL resumes.

A year ago, Talbot found himself in a similar scenario as he was joining the Kings.

“They had a guy (Pheonix Copley) that that had played a bunch the year before, but they signed myself and David Rittich and it was kind of a healthy competition to start the season,” Talbot explained. He’d win the net and play the majority of the games for LA.

“Overall I’d say my season went as well as I expected it to go,” Talbot said. “I just wanted to go in there and after a down year in Ottawa, prove that I could still be guy, and I thought I was able to do that.”

Can he do it again? That’s Talbot’s plan.

“I’m at the stage of my career where I’m not ready to just mail it in yet,” Talbot said. “I still don’t want to give up starts, I still want to compete for starts.

“I still want to compete for the playoffs and I still want to win a Stanley Cup.”

The first move by the Detroit Red Wings as the NHL’s free agent frenzy got underway Monday wasn’t making a big splash. However, it was certainly filling a team need.

Inking UFA Cam Talbot to a two-year, $2.5-million pact, the Red Wings got the necessary depth they were needng between the posts. Beyond Alex Lyon and the oft-injured Ville Husso, there wasn’t another goalie in the Detroit system with a single game of NHL experience on their resumes.

You knew that they would be adding a veteran goalie, one who has NHL experience on his CV. Someone who can play in show, but could also be serving a role as a mentor to 2021 first-round pick Sebastian Cossa with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.

“We will look at the goalie market and if something makes sense for us to do that we think improves us, whether that be via trade or free agency, we’re not opposed to doing that,” Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman said heading into free agency.

Talbot, 36, certainly fits that mold. Detroit will be his eighth NHL club. He hasn’t played a minor-league game since 2013-14, so it will be interesting to see how the goaltending battle shapes up in training camp between him and the two returnees.

Last season, Talbot saw action in 54 games for the Los Angeles Kings. He was 27-20-6 with a .913 save percentage and 2.50 GAA.

Yzerman did indicate that he wouldn’t want to be carrying three goalies at the NHL level again next season.

“I don’t see us really doing three goaltenders throughout the course of the season,” Yzerman said.

Fischer Staying Put In Detroit

Though his numbers might not offer that indication, Christian Fischer was a valuable performer for the Red Wings last season. If he continues to be that player again next season, he’ll continue to be a bargain.

Opting to stay in Detroit, the veteran right-winger agreed to a one-year deal with an AAV of $1.25 million. Last season, Fischer was was earning $1.125 million on a one-year pact with the Red Wings.

Posting pedestrian 5-14-19 offensive production, Fischer was nonetheless one-third of a stellar checking line alongside Michael Rasmussen and Andrew Copp.

Lagesson Gives Red Wings Defensive Depth

The addition of defenseman William Lagesson was a depth move made by the Red Wings.

The 6-foot-2, 211-pound Swede would play 40 games last season between the Toronto Maple Leafs (30) and Anaheim Ducks (10), collecting four assists.

Detroit didn’t really have much in GR last season in the way of defenders with any significant NHL playing experience. Lagesson, 28 has seen duty in 100 NHL games.

Lagesson and the Red Wings agreed to terms on a one-year deal for the NHL minimum salary of $775,000.

Dries Holds Local Ties

Another player who figures to be heading to Grand Rapids is center Sheldon Dries. He’s from Macomb, Michigan and played college hockey for the Western Michigan Broncos.

Dries agreed to a two-year, two-way deal. He’ll earn $775,00 in the NHL and $475,000 in the AHL. Dries, 30, spent all last season with AHL Abbotsford, Vancouver’s top farm club, netting 29 goals in 55 games. In 202-23, he scored 11 goals in 63 NHL games with the Canucks.
