The state of Michigan has long been one of USA’s hockey hotbeds. But it’s only been recently that the Red Wings have taken advantage of that.
Bob Duff wrote about the thirty-eight native Michigan players have played in the NHL, and six (Dylan Larkin, Jeff Petry, Tyler Motte, Alex DeBrincat, Andrew Copp and Jack Campbell) are on the team now. (Campbell could end up playing the entire season in Grand Rapids). But six players represents 15.4% of the Michigan list.
Detroit GM Steve Yzerman has said that the Michigan Red Wings were a coincidence, not a strategy.

Detroit Red Wings Offseason
Oscar Plandowski, a 2021 unsigned Detroit draft pick (155th), will play hockey at the University of New Brunswick next season. The school has won the past two Canadian university national titles. Also, former Red Wings player Tomas Jurco is switching teams in the KHL. He left Avangard Omsk as a free agent to sign with Kunlun Red Stars. He had 16 points in 21 games last season for Omsk.
