The hockey community tends to view the late Doug Harvey as a Montreal Canadien like Mickey Mantle is forever a New York Yankee and Earvin “Magic” Johnson belongs to the Los Angeles Lakers. But the truth is Harvey played for three other NHL teams, and one of them was the Detroit Red Wings.

In the twilight of his career, Harvey was in his fourth consecutive minor league season when the Red Wings called him up from the AHL in 1966-67. The seven-time Norris Trophy winner played two games for coach Sid Abel. News accounts at the time stated Harvey showed up 20 pounds overweight, and the Red Wings sent him back to the AHL to play for the Pittsburgh Hornets.
