Red Wings By The Numbers: Newcomers Choose Their Digits
Vladimir Tarasenko’s fresh start with the Detroit Red Wings comes with a new number on his back. The Red Wings announced Friday that Tarasenko will wear No. 11 this season.
The Russian forward had previously worn No. 91 and No. 10 in his career. It would have been controversial to ask for No. 91. That was last worn by Sergei Fedorov. Some fans believe Fedorov’s number should be retired, but the Ilitch family and others within the organization have never forgiven him for how he left the organization.
The No. 11 belonged to Filip Zadina who didn’t live up to expectation in his time in Detroit. The late Shawn Burr may have been the most popular player to wear No. 11. Daniel Alfredsson also wore it in his one season in Detroit:
Here is a look at the numbers other newcomers are wearing:
Tyler Motte, No. 14:
Who wore it last: Robby Fabbri wore it for four years before being traded to the Anaheim Ducks this summer.
Who wore it best: Brendan Shanahan was wearing No. 14 when he helped the Red Wings win three Stanley Cups (1997, 1998 and 2002)
