Alex Chiasson’s first fling with the Detroit Red Wings was brief. It was also very effective.

Adding Chiasson to the roster following the NHL trade deadline in 2022-23, he would go on to score six goals in 20 games for Detroit.

Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman is apparently willing to find out if lightning can strike twice. Chiasson, 33, will be on the ice Tuesday as the Red Wings open training camp in Traverse City. He will be there on a PTO.

The 6-foot-3, 208-pound left winger was out of pro hockey last season. He attended training camp with the Boston Bruins on a PTO, but didn’t make the cut.

The previous season, Chiasson began the 2022-23 campaign on an AHL contract with the Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit’s top farm club. He would score nine goals and account for 20 points in 29 games with the Griffins.

After a series of deadline deals left the Red Wings short-staffed at the NHL level, the decision was made to sign Chiasson to an NHL contract and promote him to Detroit.

Chiasson Effective With Red Wings

He would prove to be an effective power-play performer in his short stint with the Red Wings. Five of Chiasson’s six goals and seven of his nine points came while Detroit was enjoying the man advantage.

To be sure, this is a longshot opportunity again for the veteran NHL forward. About 20% of players who attend NHL training camps on PTOs wind up signing a contract with that team.

On the other hand, Chiasson is better off playing somewhere than sitting at home. Even if the Red Wings decide they don’t want him, it gives other NHL teams the opportunity to see what he’s got left in the tank.

From the point of view of the Wings, they are going to need goal scoring. They saw 75 goals depart from last season’s lineup.

Six times in 11 NHL seasons Chiasson has hit for double digits in goals. He scored a career-high 22 goals for the Edmonton Oilers in 2018-19.

Alex Chiasson turned 33 on Sunday but the former Detroit Red Wings forward didn’t get what he wanted for his birthday – an NHL job. The Boston Bruins were releasing Chiasson, who was in camp on a PTO.

Chiasson saw action in just one preseason game for the Bruins. He was held pointless in a contest against the Buffalo Sabres. Skating 14:31 of ice time, he failed to capitalize on a apair of quality scoring chances during Bosston power plays.

Last season, in 20 games with the Red Wings, Chiasson was counting 6-3-9 numbers. Five of his six goals were tallied during Detroit power plays. He was also collecting 9-11-20 totals from 29 games with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.

Four previous times during his playing days, Chiasson was earning NHL contracts from teams via PTOs. In 2017-18 he was a Stanley Cup winner with the Washington Capitals.

Alex Chiasson has played 651 NHL games. He owns a Stanley Cup championship ring. But that only gets him the promise of a fair trial when it comes to making the Boston Bruins’ roster.

The former Detroit Red Wings 2022-23 player is in Boston’s camp on a Player Tryout Offer (PTO). It’s not an easy situation for a 32-year-old player.

This will be the fifth time that the 6-foot-4, 208-pound winger is trying to make an NHL roster on a PTO.

“It sucks,” Chiasson told Boston Hockey Now. “It’s tough. I won a (Stanley) Cup in 2018 (with the Washington Capitals), and I had to go to Edmonton on a PTO. Left with my backpack and a suitcase, and you don’t really know where you’re going to end up. I ended up having my best year of my career that year, I had 22 goals.”

Chiasson Has Shot in Boston

Chiasson totaled 20 points in 29 games for the Grand Rapids Griffins last season and then gave the Red Wings a boost on the power play with a strong net-front presence. The Red Wings appreciated Chiasson, but weren’t willing to give him a one-way contract for 2023-24.

“This game has given me so much. [I] try to keep it going, try to squeeze a little bit more out of it, and [I’m] excited for this opportunity,” Chiasson said on Friday. “I think where I’m at in my career, the two things I was really looking forward to on a team I was looking at was: A). Was there an opportunity for me to come in and earn a spot? There’s obviously a lot of teams that have tons of forwards, and teams are in different phases, winning or whatnot. I think that kind of brings me to my second point: I wanted to be on a team that was competitive.”

Chiasson may have a shot to make the Bruins. Because of Patrice Bergeron‘s and David Krejci’s retirement, plus other moves, they may have some open spots, depending upon, how their younger players perform.

“I think I have a good support system at home — my wife’s been great,” Chiasson said. “It doesn’t get any easier. I think as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that — and I’ve always said this: It’s a privilege to play in the NHL. You can’t take this for granted, and I know one day when I stop playing, whenever that is, that I really put it all out there. I could have taken the easy way out, but whatever opportunity that came my way, I fought for what I believe in, and that’s to play in the NHL.”

There’s plenty of debate as to where Detroit Red Wings 2022 first-round draft pick Marco Kasper will be playing his hockey during the 2023-24 season. But before he sets out on a bid to crack the Detroit roster, he’s taking time to be thankful to those where it all started out for him.

The Klagenfurt Red Jackets, Kasper’s original pro team in his native Austria, are playing their preseason home opener on Wednesday and Kasper is going to be the guest of honor. He’ll be signing autographs and posing for selfies during the first and second intermissions of the game.

Kasper, who saw duty in one game for the Red Wings last season, has been working out with his old club in prepartion to depart soon for Detroit and begin his pursuit of an NHL career.

And then was one – one remaining UFA who played last season with the Detroit Red Wings without an NHL option for the 2023-24 season.

On Monday, the Boston Bruins were announcing that right-winger Alex Chaisson will be attending their fall training camp on a professional tryout offer (PTO). That leaves only forward Adam Erne from last season’s Red Wings club without a deal for the upcoming NHL campaign.

Last season, Chiasson would play 20 games for the Red Wings following the NHL trade dealine. He wound up scoring six goals, five of which came on the power play.

Originally, Chiasson began the season on an AHL contract with Detroit’s top farm club, the Grand Rapids Griffins. He accounted for 9-11-20 totals in 29 games with GR in Chiasson’s first minor-league action in a decade. The Red Wings were opting to sign Chiasson to an NHL deal when roster spots were opening up following the NHL trade deadline.

Reports are that Detroit was offering Chiasson a one-year, two-way deal following the season. He was opting to explore what he could attain via the open market after becoming a UFA on July 1.

Chiasson Could Find Opportunity In Boston

The Buins will be undergoing a revamping at forward this season. Both captain Patrice Bergeron and center David Krejci were announcing their retirements from the NHL in the summer. Meanwhile, former Hart Trophy-winning winger Taylor Hall was being dealt to the Chicago Blackhawks to create some salary cap space.

If Chiasson, 32, ends up making the grade with the Bruins, they will be his fourth NHL team in as many seasons and eighth of his 11-season career. Chiasson broke in with the Dallas Stars in 2012-13. He would score a career-high 22 goals for the Stars in 2013-14 and win a Stanley Cup with the 2017-18 Washington Capitals.

Adam Erne had the right to feel as if he had established himself an NHL regular in 2021 when the Detroit Red Wings agreed to give him a two-year contract worth $2.1 million per season.

But he is equally justified this summer to be perplexed that he is out of work with NHL training camps almost a month away.

Erne and Alex Chiasson are the two veterans from last season’s Red Wings still on the list of available free agents. The Red Wings have about $5.9 million in cap space remaining with Joe Veleno still to sign. Here are some UFAs that fans know well.

Wing Patrick Kane

Kane had offseason surgery and won’t be ready to play until after the holidays. Reports say he won’t sign until closer to his return date. He wants to go to a contender. No one would be surprised if he returns to the New York Rangers. The Florida Panthers seem like a possibility.

Left Wing Tomas Tatar

The former Red Wings player admitted he talked to the Pittsburgh Penguins. But do they really have the cap space to get a deal done? Tatar is a consistent scorer. He boasts eight seasons of scoring 19 or more goals in the NHL. Last season, he netted 20 goals for the New Jersey Devils

Left wing Adam Erne

At 28, Erne still should be an attractive role player. He was second on the Detroit team last season with 160 hits. Erne chipped in eight goals. Depending upon playing time, Erne could be a 12- to 14-goal scorer. He’s not going to get close to last season’s $2.4 million salary , but there is still hope he could land a one-year deal for close to $1 million.

Right wing Phil Kessel

Kessel totaled 14 goals and 36 points last season. Some team will sign him. The Coyotes should re-sign him. He can still contribute offensively. He could end up being a bargain for some NHL team. His scoring instincts are still there.

Left wing Maxime Comtois

He was a 16-goal scorer two years ago. He might be a good roll-of-the-dice acquisition for a team like the Ottawa Senators or Montreal Canadiens. Comtois has feistiness in him.

Right Wing Josh Bailey

He’s been a serviceable player for a long time, but last season’s 25 points represents the worst season of his career. What general managers have to ask themselves is if Bailey has another 50-point season in him. At 33, he could be looking at coming to an NHL camp on a tryout offer (PTO).

Right Wing Alex Chiasson

There was a period in March when Chiasson scored five goals in seven games and you wondered if the Red Wings should have brought him up earlier. He can supply a quality net front presence. The Red Wings were interested in keeping him, but only if he would take a two-way deal.  At this point, Chiasson might have to accept a PTO. He will probably end up on a two-way contract if he wants to keep playing.

Team sought to keep Chiasson and Suter but were rebuffed

As the July 1 deadline for the launch of unrestricted free agency inthe NHL draws nearer, it’s fairly certain that the Detroit Red Wings will not be retaining any of their UFAs.

Not that the club didn’t try to keep a couple of players in the fold.

According to an NHL source, the Red Wings were making contract offers to two of their impending UFAs. However, both Pius Suter and Alex Chiasson were opting to pass on the offers presented to them by the Detroit brass.

Suter was offered a one-year pact to play a third season in Detroit. However, the veteran forward wants to see if he can get a multi-year deal on the open market.

The offer to Chiasson was a one-year, two-way deal. Again, according to the source, Chiasson’s camp wants to see if he can secure a full NHL contract from another club by entering into the UFA fray on July 1.

In each player’s case, the decision to see what their worth is understandable.

Suter A Versatile Performer

In three NHL seasons, Suter has never scored fewer than 14 goals. He’s a cerebral player who can play up and down a team’s lineup and kill penalties.

From Detroit’s point of view, Suter is not a player who is hard to play against. It was clear this past season that the Red Wings need to beef up their lineup.

Chiasson A Power Play Presence

Chiasson went unsigned during last summer’s UFA period. Ultimately, he was left to accept an AHL deal with the Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit’s top farm club.

Signed by Detroit and recalled following the NHL trade deadline, Chiasson would deliver instant net-front presence on the Red Wings power play. He’d score six goals in 20 games, five of which were tallied while Detroit was enjoying a manpower advantage.

[bet-promo id=”4006″ ]

Considering he couldn’t get a contract offer last season, Chiasson, 32, is rolling the dice by delving into the open market. Certainly, the Red Wings are taking into account the small sample size and Chiasson’s age as factors in their offer.

As for Detroit’s other UFAs – goalies Alex Nedeljkovic and Magnus Hellberg, defensemen Jordan Oesterle, Robert Hagg and Mark Pysyk and forward Adam Erne, the NHL source indicated none had received a contract offer to date from the Red Wings.

Detroit Hockey Now’s Red Wings Review series is assessing every player who held a significant place in the fortunes of the 2022-23 Detroit Red Wings season. We’ll be looking at the highs and lows they experienced during the recently-completed campaign, as well as what the future holds for them in Detroit. Today, we feature Alex Chiasson

Alex Chiasson

Position: Right Wing

2022-23 totals (GP-G-A-PT): 20-6-3-9

Contract Status: Becomes an unrestricted free agent (UFA) July 1

Season Synopsis

Alex Chiasson was unabashedly emotional after the Detroit Red Wings gave him an NHL contract in early March. He had signed with the Grand Rapids Griffins in 2022-23 with no guarantee that he would end up back in the NHL.

“I took a step back a little bit at the start of the year,” Chiasson said upon his return. “To come here, it’s a big accomplishment for myself. It’s definitely something I’m really proud of. It’s pretty nice to be here today…I’m trying to squeeze everything I got out of me and make the most of this opportunity.”

He did exactly that, especially on the power play where he gave the Red Wings a true boost with his net-front presence. Over the course of the season, Chiasson might have been the team’s best performer in that role. He has a knack for finding the puck during goalmouth scrambles.

Chiasson, 32, earned his promotion by registering 20 points in 29 games for the Griffins. Gritty. Good teammate. Strong around the net. That’s the read on Chiasson

“He’s been a successful net front power-play guy in this league,” Lalonde said. “Looks very comfortable there. He’s a pro. We talked about his approach in practice yesterday. I think the guys appreciate him. ”

2022-23 Red Wings Highlights

The Red Wings signed 6-foot-4, Chiasson to an NHL contract on March 3 and he responded with a stretch of five points over four games from March 8 to March 14. He had power play goals in three consecutive games in that stretch.

Over his first 12 games with Detroit, he produced eight points. He earned his keep, especially when Detroit was on the power play. Right after Chiasson joined the power play unit, the Red Wings had a span of games that featured a power play percentage of 28%

2022-23 Red Wings Lowlight

Like many of the Red Wings, Chiasson’s numbers were stressful in the season’s final couple of weeks. He was -7 in his final eight games. He had one power play goal over his last 10 games.

Before those games, he was -1 over 11 games with five goals and three assists.

What Does His Detroit Future Hold?

At the very least, Chiasson demonstrated he can still contribute to an NHL team. The Red Wings were his seventh NHL team.  He’s been around the block a few times.

The Red Wings appreciated what he brought to the team, but not enough to give him a new contract at the end of the season.

[bet-promo id=”4006″ ]

GM Steve Yzerman likes to see what’s available to him in the marketplace before making final decisions on role players.

You would think Chiasson was impressive enough last season in the AHL and his return to the Show to earn another look by some NHL teams. His power play ability alone makes him attractive. But his credentials were well established last summer, and the Red Wings’ minor-league offer was the best chance he had. Trying to stay in the league as a role player is a tough business.

Detroit Red Wings goalie Villo Husso is out, but Simon Edvinsson is in.

As for Alex Chiasson and Filip Zadina, well, you’re just going to have to wait and see.

In the latest injury updates for the Red Wings as they prepare for Tuesday’s home date with the Pittsburgh Penguins, perhaps the biggest news of all is who isn’t hurt. Defenseman Gustav Lindstrom has been deemed 100% fit.

That was forcing Detroit management to make a decision – do they return defenseman Simon Edvinsson to AHL Grand Rapids from his emergency recall, or do they keep him on a full recall?

The choice the club is making is that Edvinsson is simply too good to be going back down to the AHL.

“I believe he’s been officially recalled this morning,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. “In reality, he’d have to be, knowing Lindstrom is 100 percent.”

Red Wings Husso Still Sidelined

The news isn’t nearly as good where Detroit goalie Ville Husso is concerned. Out the past two games due to a lower-body injury, there’s currently no firm timetable for Husso’s return to action.

“He’s probably in a week-long evaluation with what he’s dealing with, getting a couple different opinions on it,” Lalonde said. “Still a couple days out before we know fully where he’s at.”

Husso’s ailment is believed to be the result of the wear and tear that comes with the workload of a professional puckstopper.

“I think this is something that has been underlying for a couple years on him, which is very common for his nature of position,” Lalonde said. “I think it’s just come to the forefront now. So it’s something I think they’re going to evaluate in the next few days.”

Chiasson, Zadina Likely Game-Time Decisions

Forward Alex Chiasson also wasn’t practicing on Monday. His status for Tuesday’s game is uncertain.

“Chiasson was unavailable for practice today because he was being evaluated during practice,” Lalonde said. “He actually skated post-practice, so I’ll know more talking to the training staff after.”

Forward Filip Zadina, an absentee for Saturday’s 3-0 loss at Philadelphia due to a lower-body injury, was practicing on Monday. However, determination of his status for Tuesday is still in the process of determination.

“Zadina, I don’t know, will be how he feels after practice,” Lalonde said. “Still has an underlying lower-body situation from his previous injury.”

Defenseman Ben Chiarot (upper=body injury) was also back on the ice, but won’t be suiting up on Tuesday.

“No, I wouldn’t call Chiarot available,” Lalonde said. “It was a good step in the right direction. Skating today, this has been right on the time frame, couple-week time frame we had talked about.”

Surgery Ahead For Fabbri?

Lalonde also was hinting about the possibility that surgery could be in the future for injured Detroit forward Robby Fabbri.

“I think we’re going to have news here the next couple of days,” Lalonde said of Fabbri. “I don’t expect him back the rest of the year. It’s more of a cautious approach with him, looking more towards next year.”

Already having undergone three knee surgeries during his NHL career, Fabbri has been sitting out since being hurt in a leg-on-leg collision with Chicago’s Tyler Johnson in a March 8 game. Lalonde wasn’t ruling out surgery as a potential solution to Fabbri’s latest issue.

“There is potentially,” Lalonde admitted. “But I don’t think it’s going to be an aggressive type surgery. If there is, I think it’s going to be a clean-up type thing, but they’re still in the process of figuring it out.”

First NHL goals are generally cause for an overabundance of excitement. Perhaps it speaks volumes to the character of Detroit Red Wings rookie defenseman Simon Edvinsson that his initial NHL tally wasn’t foremost on his mind following their 4-3 loss to the St. Louis Blues on Thursday.

“For myself I took two penalties so I need to step up there,” Edvinsson said. “I will be happy for the goal tomorrow, but we lose today.”

Edvinsson was assessed holding and cross-checking minors during the game but neither resulted in St. Louis power-play goals.

Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde wasn’t nearly concerned by the infractions incurred by his first-year defender.

“Part of the development of it,” Lalonde said of the penalties. “Loved he got on the sheet. He made some plays offensively,.

“Still I think his game is good in that he was avoiding some big mistakes. Loved some of his plays in transition, quick up, see the ice like that. I think another positive step for him.”

Husso Out For Weekend

Although officially listed as day-to-day, it doesn’t appear that Ville Husso will be appearing in the Red Wings net for the immediate future.

“I would not expect him this weekend,” Lalonde said. “He’s going through some evaluations. It’s something that’s been nagging him for a while.”

In the meantime, Magnus Hellberg and Alex Nedeljkovic, both impending unresticted free agents, will both be given the chance to prove their worth between the pipes.

“They’ll both get the net,” Lalonde said. “They’ll both get opportunity. I want them to work hard. This is a great opportunity for both of them.

“If someone can run with it, they’re going to get it. It’s sitting right there. It’s a hug opportunity for both guys.”

Ice Chips

Even with Thursday’s loss to St. Louis, Detroit is still 5-2 at home against Central Division clubs this season . . . Detroit forwards Dominik Kubalik (0-2-2) and Filip Zadina (1-1-2) each have two-game point streaks . . . Red Wings forward David Perron (0-3-3) is riding a three-game point streak . . . Detroit winger Lucas Raymond has five assists over the past six games.
