In the end, the Lucas Raymond contract negotiation probably ended up where it should have ended up.  He received an eight-year deal paying him an average of 8.075 million per season.

In terms of comparable, his number landed between Carolina’s Seth Jarvis (eight years, $7.9 million AAV) and Ottawa’s Tim Stutzle (eight years,  $8.35 million AAV). Stutzle had 70 points in 75 games, while Raymond had 72 in 82 and Jarvis managed 67 points in 81. Stutzle had registered 39 goals and 90 points in 2022-23

“We’re obviously very pleased with the way he finished the season and showed that he has the ability to play at a higher level and he did that in all aspects,” Detroit GM Steve Yzerman said. “I can never guarantee how production goes, but I expect him to be one of our top players again. I expect his game to continue to grow this year. But, yeah, last year, obviously it helped his case a lot. When you’re talking numbers. He had, I think, 13 goals in the last 20 games. He really helped his cause and we were thrilled to see him play that well.”

This is life-altering money for Raymond, but this deal could also end up being a win for the Red Wings if Raymond continues to improve. We will likely see more players earning $10 million per season if the salary cap continues to rise.

Detroit pays leading scorer $8.075 million

Lucas Raymond will be a Detroit Red Wings player for the next eight seasons. He’s in agreement with the team on an eight-year deal with an AAV of $8.075 million.

It’s undoubtedly more than GM Steve Yzerman was originally expecting to be paying to the 22-year-old left-winger. However, in the long run, it may pay dividends.

By getting Raymond to lock into a long-term pact, if the NHL salary cap keeps climbing as anticipated, then at some point in the duration of this deal, it’s going to seem like Raymond is underpaid.

Looking at comparables, already, his cap hit is lower than Ottawa Senators forward Tim Stutzle ($8.35 million) but higher than Seth Jarvis of the Carolina Hurricanes ($7.42 million).

No one can debate that Raymond didn’t do his part in order to get paid. As Detroit was battling for a playoff spot down the stretch of the 2023-24 NHL season, he was stepping up and delivering the goods.

The man the Red Wings call Razor was razor sharp. He was accounting for seven goals and five assists in Detroit’s final eight regular-season games. He would score 14 goals over the last 18 Red Wings games.

In his third NHL season, Raymond led the club with a career-high 72 points. He also ascended to the 30-goal plateau for the first time, netting 31 times.

How Much Will Red Wings Pay Seider?

Now the final question left for Yzerman to answer is what will he be paying his remaining restricted free agent, defenseman Moritz Seider?

Earlier in the day Monday, the Red Wings were locking up forward Jonatan Berggren on a one-year pact with an AAV of $825,000. Add in Raymond’s $8.075 cap hit and that leaves Detroit with $8,748,194 in cap space.

The speculation is that no one will be given a salary higher than the $8.7 AAV of captain Dylan Larkin. So that probably slots Seider, the 2021-22 Calder Trophy winner, in at around $8.6 million.

The small amount of news leaking out about the Lucas Raymond contract negotiations is coming out of Sweden. His agent Peter Werner isn’t reporting any progress, but also doesn’t seem pessimistic.

“We are in the process of negotiating, but have not yet quite reached the goal,” Werner told hockeysverige.se. “We believe and hope, of course, that it will be ready before the camp. That is the objective.”

The Swedish story was translated by Google.

Raymond and Detroit teammate Moritz Seider (also without a contract) have been training together in Germany, according to hockey hockeysverige.se‘s Uffe Bodin.

“I can imagine that in terms of hockey and nice to be with someone who is in a similar position,” Werner said about Seider and Raymond training together.

Swedish player Andreas Larsson is also training with them.

“In the meantime, as he has always done, Lucas focuses on figuring things out to get better,” Werner said.

The RFA class also includes Boston goalie Jeremy Swayman and New Jersey’s Dawson Mercer. It was reduced by one Tuesday when Toronto’s Nick Robertson signed a one-year deal for $875,000. Rumors say the Devils and Mercer may be looking at a bridge deal to get something done.

The Red Wings want to sign both Seider and Raymond to long-term deals, but a bridge deal also could be a possibility.

Detroit training camp is less than 10 days away. The clock is ticking. Can the two sides come together?

“Oh yes, without a doubt,” Werner said, “but to a reasonable agreement.”

It is always difficult to predict how an NHL player’s contract negotiations will unfold, but no one was predicting the Red Wings and Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider would have difficulty reaching agreement this summer.

The Red Wings want to sign the two young players to long-term deals. Both players want to stay with the Red Wings.

But now with NHL season just over a month away, Raymond’s agent has reported there has been no progress in the Raymond contract talks.  There’s been no official word from the Moritz Seider camp, but there have been whispers that some progress has been made.

Whether that leads to a resolution of a new deal soon remains to be seen. For the first time, there is worry that the players will be unsigned when the season starts. These two players are critical to any hope for the Red Wings to qualify for the playoffs.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Lucas Raymond‘s agent reports there has been no progress in his client’s contract negotiations with the Red Wings.

Shai Buium, Nate Danielson and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard are on Detroit’s roster for the Rookie series games against the Dallas Stars in Traverse City. They two teams will play games on Sept. 14 and 15.

Defenseman Axel Sandin-Pellikka, a 2023 Detroit first-round pick, has recovered nicely from his injury.

The veil of secrecy shrouding the contract talks between the Detroit Red Wings and restricted free agent forward Lucas Raymond has been pulled back slightly. And what this peek behind behind the curtain is revealing will not be well-received by Red Wings fans.

With two weeks until the club is set to open main training camp in Traverse City, the Raymond camp is saying that there currently is no common ground in place for the framework of a new contract.

“Today there is no proposal that is equal,” Peter Werner, Raymond’s agent, told writer Gunnar Nordstrom of Swedish website Expressen.

Nordstrom also spoke with Red Wings vice-president of hockey operations Nicklas Lidstrom about Raymond’s status. Lidstrom’s response was to acknowledge that the two sides were talking about “big money” in their contract discussions.

Projections are that Raymond could be seeking a new deal ranging in the $7.5 million per season range.

“The hopes are high that we will find a solution,” Werner said. “Lucas wants nothing more than to play hockey.”

For his part, Raymond has been insisting all along that he’ll be letting his negotiators handle all of the contract talks.

“I think I leave that to my agent and the people around me helping me,” Raymond said earlier in the summer.

Certainly, it only makes sense for Raymond to shoot for the moon with his new contract. He’s coming off a career year, collecting 31 goals and a team-leading 72 points. As Detroit was battling for a playoff spot, Raymond would score 14 goals over the club’s final 18 games.

No Word On Red Wings Seider, Berggren

Raymond is among three The Red Wings are RFAs. Defenseman Moritz Seider and forward Jonatan Berggren also remain without contracts as training camp nears.

“I get both sides,” Seider said shortly after the 2023-24 season reached its conclusion. “In the end it’s a business.”

What’s the deal with the status of new contracts for Detroit Red Wings restricted free agents Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond? Enquiring Red Wings fans want to know.

There are published reports suggesting that left-winger Raymond and the club are far apart in their negotiations for a new pact. On the other hand, Detroit Hockey Now is hearing from NHL sources familiar with contract talks that Seider and the team are getting close to an agreement on a new deal.

What to believe? There’s the rub when it comes to the Red Wings and rumors. There are so few leaks coming out of Little Caesars Arena at any time of the season that it makes you suspect GM Steve Yzerman is coating the place with industrial strength Flex Seal.

The fact of the matter is that nothing gets out about the business of the team since Yzerman took charge. He’s running the tightest ship in the league. Red Wings front office types who used to be welcoming of the media under Ken Holland’s tutelage now avoid saying much of anything on the record at all costs.

“That’s a question for Steve,” is a popular refrain from members of the club’s hockey operations staff.

The problem with that is Yzerman seldom chooses to interact with the media. And when he does, it’s always on his terms.

“We will get contracts done with them,” Yzerman said earlier this summer of his RFAs. “It’s just a question of when and what term we do on all of them.”

Red Wings Not In The Rumor Business

Stop and think about it for a moment. Since Yzerman became GM, when was the last time a rumor leaked out about Detroit that came to be true? During the last NHL Expansion Draft, the name of every team’s lost player was leaked prior to the draft save one – the Red Wings.

Could Raymond’s camp be playing hardball with the club in contract talks? Sure. In fact, they’d be foolish not to be doing so.

He’s coming off a career year, with 31 goals and a team-leading 72 points. As Detroit was battling for a playoff spot, Raymond would score 14 goals over the club’s final 18 games.

Seder made it abundantly clear from the outset that playing in Detroit was his long-term desire.

“I get both sides,” Seider said shortly after the 2023-24 season reached its conclusion. “In the end it’s a business.

“I’m confident enough to say that I think I’ll be a Red Wing for next year and that’s what matters most.”

Raymond wasn’t as certain about how he saw his future unfolding.

“I don’t know to be honest with you,” Raymond said at the same time regarding his contract status. “I think I leave that to my agent and the people around me helping me.

“As far as when a deal will get done, I don’t know. What I do know is that I love this team, I love this city and I want to be here. But as far as the other things, it’s kind of out of my control at this point.”

The Detroit Red Wings will be holding a bobblehead night for Patrick Kane. That could end up being just one of many milestones ahead this season for the veteran forward.

Kane bobblehead night is set for January 7 agains the Ottawa Senators. By then, he should’ve already become the third American NHL player to reach 1300 career points. Kane needs 16 points to hit that milestone. He’d be joining two other former Red Wings, Brett Hull (1391) and Mike Modano (1374).

Kane is also going into the season needing 29 goals to reach 500 as an NHLer. He’d be the sixth US player to join the NHL’s 500-goal club. A longer range project for Kane is 900 assists. He must dish out 86 helpers to get there. However, 81 assists will tie him with Phil Housley for the most-ever by an American NHLer

Speaking of American-born Red Wings, captain Dylan Larkin requires six assists to reach 300. A 60-point season would give Alex DeBrincat 500 NHL points.

And defenseman Jeff Petry will join the NHL’s 1000 games played club if he suits up 63 times this season. Petry is also five goals away from 100 and 23 points from 400.

Red Wings Tarasenko Nearing 300 Goals

Detroit newcomer Vladimir Tarasenko is only seven illuminated red lights away from 300 NHL goals. Tarasenko also is in need of 71 points to get to 700. Good thing he’s signed for two seasons, because unless he enjoys a remarkable campaign, he’s probably not getting 70 points in 2024-25.

Forward Lucas Raymond, who scored a career-high 31 goals last season, needs 29 more to get to 100 in the NHL. A 26-point total will put Raymond to 200 during his NHL career.

Two newcomers between the pipes are also seeking to become milestone men in 2024-25. Cam Talbot, an NHL All-Star Game participant last season, is just 14 appearances away from 500 NHL games. That’s an impressive total for a netminder.

Jack Campbell needs seven wins for 100 as an NHLer. Considering he’s ticketed for the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, some misfortune would likley need to happen to the three Detroit goalies ahead of him on the depth chart for Campbell to be accumulating seven NHL wins this season.

Of course, there’s one milestone all Red Wings fans would like to see occur during the upcoming campaign. That would be Detroit putting an end to the club’s eight-season NHL playoff absence.

Over the summer, Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde has frequently engaged Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond in conversation.

“I’ve talked to them about three times in the summer,” Lalonde said. They talk about plenty of stuff to do with the future of the team. What never comes up in those conversations, though, is the topic concern of every Red Wings fan regarding the immediate future of both players.

“We don’t even talk about the contract,” Lalonde said.

That, he reasons, is none of his business.

“This is exactly why we have the GM layer and those guys have the agent layer,” Lalonde explained. “That’s between (Detroit GM) Steve (Yzerman) and them, Steve and the agent.

“It’s been business for us and for them.”

For Lalonde, when he talks to Seider and Raymond, it’s business as usual.

“With us it’s just the same thing, the same message for all our guys,” Lalonde said. “We want to progress, we want to keep moving, keep building this. We want a little bit more than last year.

“Obviously those guys are a big part of it.”

Red Wings Lalonde Confident Deals Will Get Done

There’s no questioning how vital both Seider and Raymond are to the success of the Red Wings. Raymond was a 31-goal scorer last season. His 72 points were leading the team in scoring.

Seider led the Red Wings in time on ice (22:22) and shorthanded time on ice (2:33) per game. He’s logging those minutes in hard situations against the opposition’s best players.

“He’s going to be seeing that the rest of his career,” Lalonde said.

The big German defenseman also wound in a tie for eighth among NHL defensemen with 211 hits. He was second among NHL rearguards with 212 blocked shots.

While it might seem like the Red Wings are running out of time to get restricted free agents Seider and Raymond under contract, Lalonde is entirely confident that they will find common ground a get a deal done prior to the opening of training camp next month.

“I’m not worried,” Lalonde said. “It’s all part of it. I’ve had a little experience with this with past RFAs.

“I think it’s all part of the process.”
