NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman delivered good news at the Board of Governors meeting Wednesday by saying next season’s salary cap is expected to rise by up to $4.5 million. With the salary cap currently at $83.5 million, the preliminary cap projection has it landing at between $87-88 million.

Bettman stressed the numbers are very, very preliminary.

This is important news for teams because the salary cap, due to the COVID-19 complications, has only grown by a total of $4 million since 2018-19.

This is also good news for the Red Wings who have Moritz Seider, Michael Rasmussen and Lucas Raymond to re-sign next summer.  David Perron is the highest profile unrestricted free agent. According to capfriendly.com, the Red Wings only have 12 players signed for next season. With the expected increase in the salary cap, the Red Wings will have about $30 million in salary cap space to put their roster together.

Boston Hockey Now reports the Boston Bruins have joined the growing list of NHL teams kicking the tires on possible trades for a defenseman.

Are the Bruins engaging in trade talks for Arizona defenseman Jakob Chychrun?

BHN’s Jimmy Murphy quoted an unnamed NHL team executive saying: “I think depending on their health in the coming weeks or months, (Matt) Grzelcyk or (Brandon) Carlo could be in play for a guy like Chychrun. Can you imagine a (Bruins) left side with – say they don’t trade Grzelcyk – (Hampus) Lindholm, Chychrun and him down the left?”

But Murphy says the team’s most pressing need is a right-shot defenseman. When the Bruins beat the Coyotes 6-3, they only had one natural right-shot defenseman. They now also have right-shot defenseman Anton Stralman, but Murphy said the Bruins defense was a “hot mess” in a 7-5 loss to the Ottawa Senators.

Murphy’s report after TSN’s Darren Dreger said that a growing list of Canadian teams are looking for help on defense, although they may not be willing to pay the price for Chychrun. They are all looking at all of their options.

In the NHL where 20 teams have less than $3 million salary cap remaining, the Detroit Red Wings will start the season with more than $13 million in salary cap space.

The Red Wings have $14.2 million remaining with only Givani Smith still to sign, according to CapFriendly.com. Only the Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabres have more cap space than the Red Wings. The Sabres have $23.6 million and the Senators are at $24.5 million with Brady Tkachuk still to sign

What’s remarkable is that Yzerman, at least on paper, significantly improved his team this offseason with the acquisitions of center Pius Suter, goalie Alex Nedeljkovic and defenseman Nick Leddy. He spent more than $11 million on those three players and that could not have been predicted. He also left room for prize prospect defenseman Moritz Seider.

Detroit’s cap space outlook gives Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman plenty of room to maneuver in-season, particularly around the trade deadline when teams will try to create cap space to make deals.  Eleven NHL teams have zero cap space remaining heading into the start of the season.

Yzerman also has $24.3 million coming off his cap next summer. That list does include Nick Leddy and Robby Fabbri.

In evaluating how Yzerman has managed his salary cap, it’s hard to find any fault with his strategy.

Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman bought a No. 2 center, a starting goalie and a puck moving defenseman and still has plenty of cap space left.

CapFriendly.com still shows the Red Wings with an NHL-leading $25.75 million in cap space remaining. However, the figure is misleading because they have four restricted free agents still to sign.

The Red Wings could have between $13 million and $13.75 million in cap space when everyone is signed. Cap space is valuable, given the vast majority of teams in the NHL are tight against the cap.

Here is a capsule look at Red Wings’ situation

As of today:  Nineteen players of the 23-person preliminary roster are signed.

Restricted free agents still to sign: Jakub Vrana, Adam Erne, Filip Hronek and Givani Smith.

Detroit Hockey Now’s Estimate salary cost for RFAs: About $11.4 million. That presumes none of the players receive a long-term deal. If the Red Wings tie up Vrana long-term it could increase the salary cap hit by up to $2 million.

Other additions:  Our preliminary roster includes Moritz Seider because it is likely he will play in Detroit this season. The roster isn’t including Joe Veleno or Lucas Raymond or Wyatt Newpower who are signed but still must make the team.

Red Wings future cap status: Frans Nielsen, Robby Fabbri, Vladislav Namestnikov, Sam Gagner, Danny DeKeyser,  Nick Leddy, Troy Stecher and Marc Staal have contracts that are expiring after this season. Their current contracts total $25.1 milion potentially coming off the books, although presently Fabbri seems like a priority to resign.
