Former Detroit Red Wings player Filip Zadina, who hasn’t lived up to expectations in the NHL, will now test his ability in the Swiss League with Hockey Club Davos.

Zadina, 24, signed a two-year deal with Davos. No financial details were released, but the average salary in the Swiss League is in the range of $250,000-$330,000. He earned $1.1 million last season with the San Jose Sharks, and as much as $1.8 million per season when he was with the Red Wings.

The signing came a few days after hockey insider Kevin Weekes reported Zadina’s representatives were talking to three teams. He didn’t specify whether the teams were in the NHL or abroad.

In the summer of 2023, Zadina asked Detroit GM Steve Yzerman to release him from a contract that paid him an average $1.8 million. He wanted a fresh start elsewhere.  He was actually risking $4.56 million because his final two seasons of the deal paid him actual salaries of $1.83 million and $2.73 million.

Phone Didn’t Ring

In Detroit, Zadina was viewed as a failed first round pick. He was picked sixth overall (when University of Michigan player Quinn Hughes was still available.). He came to Detroit with a reputation as a goal scorer. However,  he hasn’t been able to create offense consistently at the NHL level.

The gamble to give up guaranteed salary in Detroit failed because Zadina didn’t deliver for San Jose, either. He posted 13 goals and 23 points in 72 games, despite receiving a true opportunity, particularly early in the season. Zadina never scored more than 10 goals in Detroit.

The Sharks were not interested in re-signing him and his phone didn’t ring when free agency started July 1. The San Jose team was the NHL’s worst, and Zadina finished with a minus-44 plus-minus.

UFA Zadina Waits For Third Chance

One of the stories of Day Two of NHL free agency is whether a team is ready to give Filip Zadina a third chance at a first impression.

In 2018, the Detroit Red Wings made the Czech standout the sixth pick in the NHL draft, believing he had the ability to develop into a 40-goal scorer. That level of development never happened in Detroit and last summer he asked to be released from his guaranteed contract to get a fresh start.

Zadina walked away from $4.65 million for the second chance he received from the San Jose Sharks. They gave him a one-year deal worth $1.1 million.  He had walked away from the second and third years of a Detroit contract that would have paid him $1.83 million and then $2.73 million.

The thinking was he would get more playing time with a team whose fan base wouldn’t view him as a failed high draft pick.

Needs Third Chance

But a year later he sits waiting for a call from any other team willing to give him a chance.

Zadina did produce a career-best 12 goals last season to give him 41 goals in 262 career NHL games. The Sharks could have retained his rights, but chose not to give him a qualifying offer. That makes him an unrestricted free agent.

Zadina did receive an opportunity to play among the top six forwards early in the season. However, by the time the end of the season he was being used the same way the Red Wings used him.  His average time on ice for San Jose was 13:20. That’s just 14 seconds more than his average in his final season with the Red Wings.

Zadina finished with 23 points for San Jose, but was minus-44. There are NHL teams looking for a depth forward.

However, if he gets a call from a team, he likely will be looking at a minimum contract. His financial gamble to leave the Red Wings has not paid off.

Drafting is not an exact science, as we will be reminded later this month when the Red Wings attend the NHL entry draft in Las Vegas.

You know the no-brainer picks, the Connor McDavids or the Steve Yzermans of the world, who are drafted high and are worth every nickel.

No matter what sport you are discussing, your mileage may vary on drafted players. It’s difficult to find any consistency in draft history. Fans must hold their breath as drafted players climb through a farm system. Some fall prey to injuries, some are traded, a few blossom elsewhere, and others are misses.

Some are big misses.

In hindsight, of course, you look at the numbers. Then it’s obvious.

But it’s not always obvious on draft day. Sports fans in Detroit know that. When Darko Milicic was drafted by the Detroit Pistons 20-plus years ago, not a single observer questioned the decision. He checked out all the boxes evaluators were looking for and had a legendary workout before the draft. He was a can’t-miss prospect.

Until he did.

Milicic was the second overall pick, taken ahead of (in order), Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade, all of whom became stars.  Big stars.

The last few years of the Ken Holland regime had plenty of misses, although not as disastrous. Still, the failure of a half-dozen choices have  hampered the Red Wings during their decade in the playoff wilderness.

Filip Zadina wanted out of Detroit because he thought a change of venue might be the fresh start he needed to turn around his career. But Zadina didn’t perform much better for the San Jose Sharks than he did for the Red Wings.

“On one hand, Zadina, the sixth-overall pick of the 2018 Draft, set a career-high in goals with the San Jose Sharks this season,” wrote Josh Frojelin of San Jose Hockey Now.  “On the other hand, that career-high was just 13 goals, unremarkable for someone selected to be a future sniper. Zadina has just 41 goals in 262 NHL games.”

“Guys who have been drafted where he was, the expectations are so high,” head coach David Quinn said. “It’s a tough thing when you come to the National Hockey League, and you have to have to develop. So much is expected of young players this day and age and it’s really unfair.”

The Sharks didn’t see the consistency from Zadina with or without the puck.Quinn wanted Zadina to figure out how he could help the team in games without scoring. Former Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill tried the same approach with Zadina. It didn’t work in Detroit and it hasn’t yet worked in San Jose. Zadina was minus-44 this season.

“I think he’s still trying to figure out what he is going to be at the National Hockey League level,” Quinn said. “It’s a process for every player. I think he’s still trying to figure it out. I thought he made progress this year.”

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Former Red Wings player Filip Zadina’s second two-goal game of the season for the San Jose Sharks assures him of  the best offensive season of his career. He boasts 12 goals, two goals more than he had in his best Detroit season.

The two-goal effort almost helped the Red Wings. Almost. It gave the Sharks a chance to take down the Philadelphia Flyers. However, Owen Tippett scored a third period goal to give Philadelphia a 3-2 triumph. The Flyers’ fate is important to the Red Wings because they could end up competing with the Red Wings for a wild card spot.  That would happen if the New York Islanders pass them for third place in the Metropolitan Division.

The Islanders are now four points behind the Flyers with two games in hand.

Zadina now has seven goals in the 13 games since the break. Coincidentally, former Detroit forward Klim Kostin assisted on one of Zadina’s goals.

Quick turnaround for the struggling Red Wings and their six-game losing streak. They play a home game Thursday against the Arizona Coyotes. Detroit lost to the Coyotes 4-0 five days ago in Arizona. Movies and literature make us believe that second chances or fresh starts enjoy high success rates. But in the real world, problems and issues don’t always go away. That’s been the case for Filip Zadina with the San Jose Sharks.

He asked the Red Wings for a trade, and GM Steve Yzerman found no takers at the end of last season. Zadina then asked Yzerman to terminate his contract even though it meant he would give up $4.53 million.

In Detroit, he was the star of a tired storyline about a high draft pick not living up to fans’ expectations. He was drafted sixth overall, one spot ahead of University of Michigan defenseman Quinn Hughes. Detroit fans will never forgive the Red Wings for that decision, and were never going to let Zadina forget it either, especially when he was developing into a bottom six forward, instead of a premium goal scorer.

It didn’t help that Hughes developed into a star. He may register 100 points and win the Norris Trophy this season.

Zadina signed with the Sharks, hoping that being with a rebuilding team would afford him more opportunity than he was receiving in Detroit.

Similar Status With Sharks

But five months into his Sharks career, he is essentially the same role player he was in Detroit. He is averaging 12:44 minutes per night, which is down from the 13:06 he earned last season in Detroit. Zadina has played under 10 minutes in five of his last eight games.

Even when he registered a career-best four points (two goals, two assists) at Calgary Thursday, he still only played 12:05.

He’s only earning $1.1 million this season on a one-year deal and it remains to be seen whether he will recoup the wages he gave up in Detroit. He was making $1.8 million per year on a multi-year deal.

But he is probably in a better situation from a mental health perspective. He left thect draft status baggage in Detroit.

In San Jose, his status as a role player isn’t the same as earning a failing grade as a draft prospect

With seven goals and 17 points in 48 games, Zadina is on pace for a career-best 27 points. The most points he had for the Red Wings in a season was 24 (10 goals, 14 assists) in 2020-21.

Sharks coach David Quinn does seem to like what he contributes. He sees growth in Zadina’s game. The Sharks just see Zadina as a player. San Jose fans don’t care about his draft status.

“The one thing about Z, he works his ass off night in, night out,” Quinn told San Jose Hockey Now. “You’re always gonna get an honest effort from him. He puts an awful lot of pressure on himself. He cares so much and he wants to do so well, and sometimes, that gets in his way. I think he’s played a little bit more relaxed lately. Nice to see him get rewarded statistically (with a four-point game). There’s definitely been some growth in his game here over the last month.”

Goal Droughts

Zadina did play more minutes earlier in the season. But he went one stretch when he went 14 games without a goal. He had one goal in 19 games before he scored two goals against Calgary.

“I was just playing the way I was playing before,” Zadina told SJHN. “Obviously, it’s hard mentally because you’re not playing that much, you’re not really on the ice. And when you’re on the ice, you’re trying to be your best to help the team. I believe we’ve done a pretty good job of it today.

Zadina feels like has seen improvement in his game.

“Recently, I’ve done a better job in the D-zone,” Zadina said. “We’re not giving up that many goals (compared to at) the beginning of the season. Obviously, the crazy (minus) number I had.”

Filip Zadina was willing to give up a two-year deal worth $4.56 million with the Detroit Red Wings for the hope that a fresh start with the San Jose Sharks would allow him to blossom. He took a contract paying him $1.1 million in San Jose

That gamble, thus far, has not paid off.

But San Jose Hockey Now writer Sheng Peng wrote this week that there’s still hope for Zadina who recently turned 24. Three weeks ago, on Nov. 16, Zadina had a two-assist game against the St. Louis Blues. Afterward, Sharks coach David Quinn said: “I like the way his game is trending.”

Here’s Peng’s full review of Zadina’s first two months in San Jose.

Zadina was moved up to the second line. But shortly thereafter, he had to leave the lineup with an upper body injury that had been nagging him for a while. The Sharks finally put him on the injured list on Nov. 27. He didn’t play again until Dec. 5. He’s played two games since, one against Detroit, and has no points, averaging about 10 minutes per game.

Peng writes that Zadina’s first season in San Jose has followed the pattern in Detroit: his progress continues to be undermined by inconsistency and injuries.

Playing with the NHL’s lowest-scoring team (2.15 goals per game), Zadina has registered three goals and five points in 22 games.  That’s a scoring rate for 11 goals and 18 points in a season. In Zadina’s best season in Detroit, he netted 10 goals.

“Zadina’s talent still is there, but so is the inconsistency,” Peng writes.

Zadina Wants to be Better

Peng says Zadina’s two-assist game against St. Louis illustrated who Zadina is a player. In addition to showing off his offensive talent on scoring plays, he made a couple of poor defensive decisions that coaches didn’t appreciate.

Just like in Detroit, coaches do appreciate Zadina’s desire, but he’s currently on the fourth line with Mike Hoffman and Jacob MacDonald

“He wants to get better,” Quinn said. “The thing that you love about him, he’s very coachable and his effort. From a coaching standpoint, that’s really all you can ask for from your players — he’s trying to do the right thing. His intentions are in the right place.

“Sometimes he can be his own worst enemy. He presses and wants to do so well. Sometimes that can be problematic.”

Where have we heard that before?

This was the moment every Detroit Red Wings fan inside Little Caesars Arena was waiting for. Tie game, third period, Patrick Kane in all alone on San Jose Sharks goalie Kaapo Kahkonen.

On a breakway, Kane, making his Detroit debut, was quickly snapping a shot to Kahkonen’s glove side. It beat the goalie cleanly . . . and banked off the post.

After Detroit’s 6-5 overtime loss, Kane was philosophical about his missed opportunity to begin with a hero’s welcome.

“Throughout the game as an offensive player you always want to create chances,” Kane said. “You can live and die with hitting the post, or not capitalizing on your chances. But you want create and you want to play the right way for your team, too.

“Woulda been nice to bury that, though.”

Wait A Second

The eight-goal outburst in the second period included six goals in a span of 3:01. That was one second off the NHL record for the fastest two goals by two teams.

In 1981, the Washington Capitals and Quebec Nordiques combined for six goals in an elapsed time of exactly three minutes.

Kane Makes Seven First Overalls For Red Wings

When he skated his first shift Thursday, Kane, the first player chosen in the 2007 NHL entry draft, became the seventh first overall pick to play for the Red Wings who wasn’t selected by the Red Wings.

The others include Garry Monahan (1963), Greg Joly (1974), Mel Bridgman (1975), Rick Green (1976), Wendel Clark (1985), and Mike Modano (1988).

Ice Chips

Sharks forward and 2018 Red Wings first-round pick Filip Zadina received a luke warm response from the Little Caesars Arena crowd upon being given a welcome back message on the center ice Jumbotron. Zadina has 3-2-5 totals in 22 games for San Jose, along with a team-worst minus-19 rating . . . Fellow former Red Wings forward Givani Smith was a healthy scratch for the Sharks . . . Detroit center J.T. Compher was missing and is listed as day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.
