It wasn’t planned that way.  However, Detroit Hockey Now’s two goaltending stories over the past 24 hours covered Red Wings goaltending yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Bob Duff’s story explains why the Red Wings are concerned about Ville Husso‘s ability to stay healthy. The medical reports are all positive about Husso, but in the back of everyone’s mind is the reality that he hasn’t play a full 60-minute game since December.

Concern over that fact showed in the Red Wings’ decision to sign Cam Talbot as a free agent.

The other DHN paywall (+) goalie story points out that Detroit’s goaltending prospects Sebastian Cossa and Trey Augustine represent the team’s most promising young goaltending tandem since the Red Wings had Glenn Hall to follow Terry Sawchuk in the 1950s.

The Red Wings could actually be thinking of Cossa and Augustine playing together at some point because the days of having a No.1 goalie playing 65 to 70-plus games are over.  Only three goalies played 60 or more games in 2023-24.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Carolina Hurricanes forward Seth Jarvis signed a new contract. It could have implications on the Lucas Raymond negotiations. They are both 22, and have similar career numbers. ty

Igor Larionov‘s son, Igor Jr., is at the center of a mini-controversy on a KHL team.

Michael Brandsegg-Nygard‘s Norway team still has a shot at qualifying for the next Olympic Games.

Red Wings Offseason

Detroit hasn’t been in the NHL playoffs since 2016, but the franchise remains a national draw for television. From Detroit fan perspective, the only negative of that is the later start times.

Augustine looking to win third straight World Junior medal

When it comes to USA Hockey, there are few success stories that have gone above and beyond what Detroit Red Wings prospect Trey Augustine has accomplished while wearing the red, white and blue.

In the past two years, he’s backstopped the USA to a pair of medals in the IIHF World Junior Championship – bronze in 2023 and gold in 2024. He was adding those to the gleaming gold (2023) and silver (2022) medals he won playing in the World U18 Championship.

“For me there’s nothing better than putting on the nation’s colors and being able to represent the United States, so I always love those opportunities,” Augustine said. He’ll be getting another one upcoming this season, as he looks to win an unprecedented third world junior medal for his country.

Were he to make that history, Augustine, still only 19, would be putting himself in select company, and in position to become the winningest performer in USA Hockey history in terms of medals earned.

Red Wings Goalie Has Five Medals

Only eight American players have earned more than four medals from major international hockey events.

At the top of the list are Dallas Stars goalie Jake Oettinger and former NHL forward Jeremy Morin, each with six medals. Beyond them, six players show five medals on their resumes.

That group includes current Red Wings goalie Jack Campbell. He won back-to-back gold medals at the World U18s (2009-10), gold (2010) and bronze (2011) at the World Juniors and a bronze at the World Championship (2015).

Also among this group with five medals are current NHLers Charlie McAvoy, Jacob Trouba, Seth Jones, Eric Johnson and Colin White. Of this group, Trouba is the only one who earned all of his medals in age-group tournaments, similar to Augustine.

Augustine has plenty of company in the four-medal club, including some legendary US players. Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin has four medals – bronze from the World U17 Challenge (2013), gold from the World U18 (2013) and a pair of World Championship bronzes (2015, 2018).

Former Red Wings defenseman and Hall of Famer Chris Chelios is also in this group, as is fellow Hall of Famer Brian Leetch. Current Red Wings forward Patick Kane is another member of the USA Hockey four-medal club.

Among other current players, Auston Matthews, Quinn Hughes. Ryan Suter, Tage Thompson and Jack Eichel each own four medals.

Detroit Red Wings prospect Trey Augustine is already part of a very select group. Not many hockey players win an IIHF world junior championship.

Now he’s looking to join an even more unique fraternity. The netminder will be seeking to win back-to-back world junior crowns.

USA Hockey was releasing its preliminary roster for the World Junior Summer Showcase, and not surprisingly, Michigan State Spartans goalie Augustine is among the invites.

Detroit’s 41st overall selection in the 2023 NHL entry draft, Augustine is among 10 players who were part of the gold medal-winning 2024 U.S. National Junior Team and are back for more. Already, his trophy cabinet is chock full of international honors.

In 2023, Augustine won a bonze medal at the world juniors. Previously, he would earn both gold (2023) and silver (2022) medals with the USA at the World Under-18 Championship. As well, he played for the USA at the 2024 senior world tourney. Augustine became just the 20th teenager to start a game in goal at the event since 1930. He’s also the youngest ever to play goal for the USA.

“We knew coming in that (Augustine) was extremely poised,” USA Hockey’s assistant executive director of hockey operations John Vanbiesbrouck said. “That puts him at the top of his age group, and he’s probably beyond his years.”

Son Of Red Wings Scout In Squad

From South Lyon, Augustine is one of only two Michiganders among the 46 players earning invitations to the summer camp. The other is Lukas Fischer of Brighton. A defenseman for the OHL’s Sarnia Sting, Fischer is the son of former Red Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer. The elder Fischer currently serves as associate director of player personnel in Detroit.

University of Denver defenseman Zeev Buium is also on the USA roster. He’s the younger brother of Red Wings defensive prospect Shai Buium. The siblings won an NCAA title together last season at Denver.

Both Lukas Fischer and Zeev Buium are eligible for the upcoming 2024 NHL entry draft.

The World Junior Summer Showcase is set for July 26-Aug. 3 at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Mich.

Sweden's Raymond and Finland's Maatta prepare for clash

For the time being, Detroit Red Wings teammates Lucas Raymond and Olli Maatta aren’t on speaking terms. There won’t be any talking – not even trash talking – until after Thursday’s IIHF World Championship quarterfinal between Raymond’s Sweden and Maatta’s Finland reaches a conclusion.

“No, he will be in airplane mode,” Raymond told Swedish website Aftonbladet.se of his Detorit teammate Maatta.

“I don’t think there will be much talk ahead, unfortunately. We can talk afterwards, if either of us feels like it.”

The Sweden vs Finland rivalry is one of the most bitter in all of international hockey. There’s bad blood, but also mutual respect.

“You have grown up and seen many classic matches against Finland,” Sweden’s Marcus Pettersson of the Pittsburgh Penguins told Aftonbladet. “There are many at home on the sofa in front of the TV who have lived through such things.

“There are probably many in our team who have met their players in the U16 national team and all the way up. It’s a rivalry and it’s going to be great fun.”

Red Wings Were Swedish Heroes

As recently as 2019, en route to winning the world title, the Finns edged the Swedes 5-4 in overtime in a quarterfinal that the Swedes were favored to win.

The situation is similar this time around. Finland finished fourth in their group. Meanwhile, for the first time in tournament history, the Swedes went 7-0 in pool play, capturing all available 21 points. Sweden enters the medal round as the top seed.

In 2006, when Sweden beat Finland in the gold-medal match at the Winter Olympics, it was Red Wings legend Nicklas Lidstrom who would score the deciding goal in the 3-2 victory by the Swedes. Sweden’s other two goals in that game were also scored by Red Wings players – Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall.

Raymond is among 18 NHL players on the Swedish roster. He has scored three goals for Sweden in this tournament. Maatta one of four NHLers with Finland, is playing in his third world tourney in four years.

He’s not the only Finnish player with a connection to the Red Wings organization. Finland goaltender Harri Sateri played for the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins in 2018-19. As well, defenseman Oliwer Kaski was with the Griffins in 2019-20 and defenseman Villi Saarijarvi skated in Grand Rapids from 2017-20.

Detroit Red Wings’ 2023 draft pick Trey Augustine is the expected starting goalie for Team USA today against Poland at the World Championships in Czechia (2 p.m., NHL Network).

Augustine, 19, is the youngest American to start in net at the World Championships. He turned 19 less than three months ago. The Michigan native was originally added to the U.S. squad with the idea he would serve as the No. 3 three goalie. But an injury to Red Wings goalie Alex Lyon opened the door to Augustine playing.

He has dressed for all four of USA’s games and played in two of them. Augustine boasts a 1.67 goals-against average (stopped 19 of 21) and .905 save percentage.

The Michigan State sophomore is one of 20 teenagers to play goal at the World Championships. That list includes five Americans:
John Gibson (2013), Rick DiPietro (2001), Mike Dunham (1992), Mike Richter (1986) and Augustine.

Augustine will return to Michigan State this fall for his sophomore season. As a freshman, he posted a 23-9-2 record with a 2.96 goals-against average and .915 save percentage. He’s now generally regarded as one of Detroit’s blue chip prospects.

There’s no timetable for signing him. As a general rule, it takes longer to develop a goalie than forward or defenseman. Having Augustine in a college program gives the Red Wings the option of taking more time to evaluate him.  Of course that doesn’t mean the Red Wings won’t sign him after his sophomore season to launch his professional career. Sebastian Cossa was a couple months short of his 20th birthday when he launched his professional career.

The Red Wings have been pleased with Cossa’s development arc with the Toledo Walleye and Grand Rapids Griffins.

When Detroit Red Wings 19-year-old prospect goaltender Trey Augustine played for USA in the Men’s World Championships last week he joined a club that includes some of the Who’s Who of all-time great goalies.

Augustine became the 20th teenager since 1930 to play goal in the storied tournament. Names on that list include Andrei Vasilevskiy, Mike Richter, Vladislav Tretiak, the late Pelle Lindbergh and former Red Wings standout Dominik Hasek. Tretiak was 17 when he played for six games for the Soviets in 1970. IIHF writer Andrew Podnieks offers the entire list in his story called “Teen ‘Tenders.”

“Obviously Trey is getting an opportunity here because of the circumstances and he has made the most of it,” said U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame goalie John Vanbiesbrouck, who is also USA Hockey’s Assistant Executive Director of Hockey operations.

Augustine, the Michigan State goaltender, is only three months beyond his 19th birthday. He is the youngest goalie ever to play in the net for the Americans at the World Championships. Mike Dunham (1992), Rick DiPietro (2001) and John Gibson (2013) are three other American goalies who played at the World Championships before their 20th birthday. Anaheim Ducks goalie Gibson was 4-1 that year with 1.56 GAA and .951 save percentage.

“We knew coming in that (Augustine) was extremely poised,” Vanbiesbrouck said. “That puts him at the top of his age group, and he’s probably beyond his years. We knew his capability to stick with it when the chips are down…He is one of the best I’ve seen at being able to  come off the bench. He did that a lot with the (U.S.) NTDP.”

Augustine Role Unplanned

Vanbiesbrouk said the original plan was for Augustine to be the No. 3 goalie: “We’ve done with others when they come through the World Juniors (program), to get a chance to be with the pros and gain some experience. ”

But that changed when Alex Lyon was injured in the second period of the game against Germany. Augustine’s success at the World Junior Championships and U-18 World Championships has given him a reputation. That’s why the Red Wings drafted him 41st overall last June.

“He has a way about him,” Vanbiesbrouck said. “It’s a credit to him that he has the mentality to play the position.”

The Americans were comfortable with the teenager as backup, mostly because Augustine doesn’t act like a teenager. There’s a seriousness about him that is different in what you see with other younger players.

“There was no uneasiness to Trey finishing the game,” Vanbiesbrouck said. “Some things are a blessing, and he certainly has been in this situation.”

Augustine got a second appearance Monday when he replaced former Red Wings player Alex Nedeljkovic after USA fell behind 4-1 to Slovakia. The Americans scored three third period goals to tie that game but lost 5-4 in overtime. He played 35:09 in that game and stopped eight of nine shots.  After two games, Augustine owns a 1.67 GAA and .905 save percentage.

Team USA management is working to bring over another goalie to replace the injured Lyon. Nedeljkovic has experience over Augustine. Depending upon who the Americans recruit, the outlook could also change.

“But I expect to see more of (Augustine) in the next couple of games,” Vanbiesbrouck said.
